Formula One returns to Africa with landmark Rwanda Grand Prix agreement

The FIA and Formula 1 have announced a historic 10-year partnership to bring the Formula One World Championship to Rwanda in the early 2030s, marking the sport's return to the African continent for the first time in over three decades.

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile and Formula 1 have unveiled a transformative agreement that will see the Formula One World Championship grace the African continent once more, with the Formula 1 African Grand Prix set to commence in the early 2030s. This momentous accord represents a defining chapter in motorsport’s illustrious history, concluding a three-decade absence from Africa and fulfilling a long-cherished ambition for the sport.

The agreement encompasses the development of a bespoke, purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, Rwanda, approximately 40 kilometres south of Kigali and adjacent to the newly constructed Kigali International Airport. This facility will be developed to the exacting standards of FIA Grade 1 classification, ensuring it meets the most rigorous international specifications. The circuit has been conceived to harmonise elegantly with the natural landscape, ingeniously utilising the region’s elevation changes to craft a distinctive and demanding racing experience whilst simultaneously affording spectators exceptional vantage points.

Beyond its function as a Formula One venue, the circuit will flourish as a year-round destination of considerable sophistication, capable of accommodating international motorsport events, major conferences, entertainment spectacles and cultural celebrations. This multifaceted approach will catalyse sustained economic expansion and investment throughout the region, establishing a lasting legacy that transcends the Grand Prix itself.

Rwanda’s Development Board will orchestrate a comprehensive programme encompassing sports facilities, tourism infrastructure and commercial development initiatives, positioning the nation as a beacon of continental motorsport advancement. The initiative reflects Formula 1’s steadfast commitment to extending its global footprint and engaging diverse audiences across burgeoning markets.

Africa presents a compelling growth opportunity for the sport, with over 100 million enthusiasts already following Formula 1 across the continent. Remarkably, nearly 60 per cent of followers in principal Sub-Saharan African markets fall within the under-35 demographic, underscoring the profound potential for the sport’s expansion.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, articulated the significance of the announcement: the return constitutes a historic moment and an essential progression in motorsport’s worldwide development. Rwanda’s unwavering commitment to delivering a world-class event, combined with rigorous adherence to international standards, exemplifies the collaborative spirit required for such ambitious ventures. The endeavour transcends mere sporting achievement, serving as a catalyst for nurturing emerging talent, developing continental capacity in motorsport and creating unprecedented opportunities for participation across Africa and beyond.
