Dubai Inmates Excel at Intercontinental Chess Championship

Competitors from Dubai's correctional establishments demonstrate strategic excellence at prestigious global tournament

Inmates from Dubai Police’s General Department of Punitive and Correctional Establishments have participated in the sixth Intercontinental Chess Championship for Prisoners, an esteemed online tournament that drew participation from 134 teams representing 54 nations across the globe. The championship, orchestrated under the distinguished auspices of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in collaboration with Dubai Chess and Culture Club, was hosted by Cook County in the United States.

The participation of Dubai’s inmates in this remarkable international competition reflects a steadfast commitment to rehabilitation and personal development. Chess, long celebrated as a game of profound intellectual engagement, serves as an exceptional medium for cultivating strategic thinking and mental discipline amongst those engaged in the correctional system.

Brigadier Sultan Abdullah Al Owais, Director of the General Department of Punitive and Correctional Establishments, emphasised that such participation exemplifies Dubai Police’s comprehensive approach to inmate reformation and preparation for successful reintegration into society. The championship underscores the transformative potential of structured educational and recreational pursuits within correctional facilities.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Abdullah Al Obaidli, Director of Inmate Education and Training, highlighted the crucial role that educational and sporting activities play in facilitating the transition of inmates back into the community. Through such engagement, individuals benefit from programmes designed to enhance their cognitive abilities, foster personal discipline and develop the skills necessary for constructive participation in society.

The recognition of Dubai’s contribution to this international arena reflects earlier achievements, with the chess fraternity celebrating Dubai Police’s inaugural first-place finish at the championship’s fourth edition in 2024. Saeed Yousuf Shukri, Secretary-General of Dubai Chess and Culture Club, commended Dubai Police’s unwavering support for inmate training, a commitment that has evidently contributed to the notable success achieved on the international stage.
