Opportunity Labs Transform Global Challenges into Actionable Solutions for Sustainable Progress

The 2026 Annual Meetings of the Global Future Leaders has convened five specialised labs that bring together emerging leaders, world experts and policymakers to convert complex future challenges into practical pathways for sustainable development.
In a significant convergence of intellectual capital and strategic vision, the 2026 Annual Meetings of the Global Future Leaders has established five Opportunity Labs designed to translate emerging global challenges into tangible, actionable solutions. This prestigious initiative, orchestrated through a collaborative partnership between the UAE Government, the World Economic Forum and the Dubai Future Foundation, represents a distinctive approach to addressing the multifaceted pressures confronting contemporary societies.
The labs unite young leaders of considerable promise with globally recognised experts, pioneering researchers and influential policymakers across five critical domains. Through an innovative backcasting methodology, each laboratory has defined an aspirational outcome for the forthcoming decade, then systematically worked backwards to identify the essential decisions, strategic partnerships and immediate actions required to realise that vision.
The first lab examined the acceleration of scientific discovery into widespread practical application, particularly as artificial intelligence amplifies the pace of knowledge creation across materials science and biotechnology. Under the facilitation of Peter Engelke, Resident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Strategy Initiative, participants explored the intricate education, research, financing and policy frameworks necessary to transform scientific breakthroughs into meaningful economic and social advancement.
The second lab investigated the fundamental physical and economic infrastructure underpinning artificial intelligence systems, encompassing semiconductors, data centres, energy networks, capital allocation and cloud computing architecture. Led by Vilas Dhar, President of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, and moderated by Jonathan David Moyer of the University of Denver, this session identified the investments, partnerships and governance structures essential for constructing more dependable, inclusive and environmentally sustainable AI infrastructure.
Examination of institutional and economic resilience formed the focus of the third lab, which explored how systems can maintain continuity amid intensifying climate and ecological pressures. Co-led by Dimple Patel, Chief Executive Officer of NatureMetrics, and moderated by Anthony Vassallo, Director of the Forecasting Initiative at RAND, participants developed scalable methodologies for supply chains, land stewardship, water resources and material use that harmonise immediate economic considerations with enduring resilience objectives.
The fourth lab concentrated upon enhancing collective decision-making processes in contexts characterised by incomplete or contradictory information. Featuring Maha Hosain Aziz, Professor at New York University, and Karen E. Young, Senior Research Scholar at Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy, the session explored how diverse viewpoints, sophisticated risk analysis and strategic foresight can facilitate responsible choices during periods of accelerated transformation.
The fifth lab examined the distribution of productivity gains, particularly those emerging from artificial intelligence advancement, with attention to fostering inclusive economic growth and enhanced employment quality. Led by Katy Knight, President and Executive Director of the Siegel Family Endowment; Jonathan David Moyer of the University of Denver; and Florian Hoffmann, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The DO, this initiative connected investment in workforce development and more equitable labour markets with policies capable of translating competitive advantages into sustainable economic prosperity.
The 2026 Annual Meetings convenes more than 700 leaders and experts representing 100 countries, encompassing government ministers and officials, 300 Young Global Leaders and 150 UAE government leaders. These gatherings constitute an integral element of the strategic partnership between the UAE Government and the World Economic Forum, designed to anticipate profound global transformations and develop practical, evidence-based responses to emerging challenges of international significance.
