UAE Pursues Ambitious Agricultural Self-Sufficiency as Sharjah Leads Waste Management Innovation

The Sharjah Investment Forum 2026 convenes government and industry leaders to explore the nation's pathway towards producing half its crops domestically, whilst celebrating Sharjah's pioneering waste diversion achievements.

The ninth edition of the Sharjah Investment Forum has brought together prominent voices in sustainable development and agricultural innovation to advance the United Arab Emirates’ vision for enhanced food security and environmental stewardship. Under the theme “Building Adaptive Economies”, the forum has provided a distinguished platform for exploring transformative opportunities across agriculture, waste management and resource conservation.

Central to the forum’s deliberations is the UAE’s compelling commitment to produce 50 per cent of its crops through domestic cultivation. This ambitious target, enshrined within the updated National Food Security Strategy 2051, reflects the nation’s forward-thinking approach to self-sufficiency and resilience. The strategy capitalises upon innovative agricultural methodologies, particularly indoor farming and hydroponic systems, which promise to elevate productivity whilst simultaneously reducing the environmental footprint associated with conventional farming practices.

Government officials have emphasised the imperative of fostering seamless collaboration between the public and private sectors, recognising that the realisation of this vision depends upon creating conducive conditions for agricultural entrepreneurs and investors. The sector is positioned as a particularly promising avenue for capital deployment throughout the forthcoming decade, with the potential to establish the UAE as a preeminent regional centre for agricultural technology excellence.

Sharjah’s remarkable environmental achievements command equal attention. The emirate has successfully diverted 93 per cent of waste destined for landfill disposal, representing the highest diversion rate across the Middle Eastern region. This accomplishment reflects an integrated approach encompassing waste recovery, recycling and innovative energy conversion technologies. The emirate’s waste-to-energy facility currently generates 30 megawatts of power, with capacity expansion planned to supply energy requirements for an emerging community development initiative.

The intersection of artificial intelligence with waste management represents a particularly compelling frontier. Potential applications include enhanced waste sorting methodologies, urban cleanliness monitoring systems and sophisticated digital simulations enabling rapid testing and refinement of sustainability solutions before real-world implementation.

Agricultural technology platforms are demonstrating remarkable innovation capacity. Recent regulatory approvals have recognised pioneering approaches to agricultural crowdfunding, establishing new pathways for capital mobilisation within the farming sector. Specialised technology centres throughout the region are rigorously testing and validating farming solutions, subsequently connecting agricultural practitioners with technologies and supply chains precisely calibrated to regional environmental conditions and cultural contexts.

The forum, convened at Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre, represents a comprehensive gathering of over 80 speakers and more than 140 distinct activities. The programme encompasses 80 direct business meetings, facilitating meaningful connections between investors, enterprises and decision-makers pursuing collaboration opportunities across the sustainable development landscape.
