Abu Dhabi’s Agricultural Transformation Strategy Cultivates a Resilient and Sustainable Food Future

On World Food Day, ADAFSA unveils an ambitious vision to revolutionise the Emirates' agricultural sector through innovation, technology and strategic partnerships, positioning Abu Dhabi as a global leader in sustainable food systems.
The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority has reaffirmed its commitment to establishing a food system of remarkable resilience and sustainability, marking World Food Day with an affirmation of the Emirate’s unwavering dedication to securing supplies and advancing agricultural innovation. This year’s observance carries particular significance, resonating with the theme ‘Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow’ and reflecting Abu Dhabi’s comprehensive response to the interconnected challenges of climate change, resource constraints, population expansion and supply chain volatility.
Abu Dhabi’s Agricultural Transformation Strategy represents an ambitious endeavour to fundamentally reshape the agricultural landscape by 2040, operating under the guiding principle of ‘Grow more with less’. The strategy encompasses a sophisticated framework of five pillars: Self-Sufficient and Productive operations, Resource Efficient practices, Resilience mechanisms, Safe and Secure systems, and Technology and Financial enablement. These pillars underpin 13 flagship programmes that traverse the entire agricultural value chain, from foundational infrastructure through to consumer consumption.
The numerical ambitions are extraordinarily transformative. Abu Dhabi aspires to elevate its ranking within the Global Food Security Index to fifth position worldwide, whilst simultaneously expanding the agricultural sector’s contribution to GDP from AED9.5 billion to AED34.6 billion. Self-sufficiency in essential food commodities is targeted to rise from 30 percent to 70 percent, whilst irrigation water consumption shall diminish by 49 percent through enhanced resource management.
This strategic vision gained considerable momentum following the triumphant Global Food Week 2026, hosted in Abu Dhabi, which attracted more than 47,000 visitors and 2,580 exhibitors representing 92 countries. The event catalysed 97 agreements and partnerships valued at more than AED6.9 billion, crystallising international cooperation and investment opportunities within the food and agriculture sectors.
The Authority’s approach integrates advanced technologies, artificial intelligence and data analytics into agricultural production and resource management, complemented by rigorous scientific research conducted through dedicated agricultural research stations. These institutions serve as laboratories for innovative solutions uniquely suited to desert environmental conditions, facilitating the transition from pilot programmes to comprehensive implementation across operating farms.
Empowerment of farming communities forms an integral component of this transformation, with the strategy designed to enable 75 percent of farms to access agricultural financing and investment whilst expanding advanced technological adoption to 70 percent of operational holdings. Strategic partnerships with government entities, research institutions, private enterprises and investors provide the collaborative architecture necessary to advance climate-smart agriculture and strengthen biosecurity systems.
