Abu Dhabi Wildlife Response Network Launches to Protect Emirate's Precious Species

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi has unveiled a comprehensive collaborative framework designed to coordinate rapid rescue, rehabilitation and release of wildlife in distress, bringing together government bodies, NGOs, academic institutions and community partners in a unified effort to safeguard the emirate's rich biodiversity.

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi has unveiled the Abu Dhabi Wildlife Response Network, a sophisticated collaborative initiative engineered to enhance coordinated rescue, rehabilitation and care for wildlife across the emirate. This integrated framework unites government entities, non-governmental organisations, academic institutions, private stakeholders and engaged community members within a unified operational structure, fostering responsible reporting, timely intervention and the successful return of recovered animals to their natural habitats.

The network was formally launched during a significant gathering on Saadiyat Island, where partners, specialists and community members convened to celebrate the emirate’s evolving commitment to wildlife protection. The occasion featured presentations on the network’s capabilities and rescue operations, whilst honouring the dedicated partners and individuals whose contributions have advanced these vital conservation efforts. The ceremony concluded with the ceremonial release of rehabilitated sea turtles back into the waters surrounding Saadiyat Island, a poignant demonstration of the network’s restorative mission.

This initiative builds upon the Environment Agency’s considerable expertise developed since 2016, when its rescue and rehabilitation programme commenced with sea turtle interventions and subsequently expanded to encompass sea snakes, dugongs, dolphins and various bird species. Maitha Mohamed Al Hameli, Acting Executive Director of Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity, emphasised that effective wildlife protection demands swift response capabilities, profound scientific knowledge and meaningful collaboration among all stakeholders.

The network operates through an integrated digital framework that streamlines wildlife rescue operations from initial public reporting through comprehensive case management. Each report is meticulously logged and assessed before specialised field teams are dispatched to stabilise animals requiring immediate intervention. Animals are then transferred to dedicated rehabilitation centres where veterinarians and specialists deliver species-specific care, optimising recovery prospects. Following successful rehabilitation, animals are released into their natural environments, with ongoing monitoring for cases requiring extended attention.

Beyond rescue operations, the network serves as a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange and scientific collaboration, enabling stakeholders to coordinate efforts and achieve measurable, enduring conservation outcomes. Data collected through comprehensive documentation of rescue cases, species health monitoring, mortality investigation and threat identification substantially enriches the evidence base for conservation strategy, informing recovery initiatives and guiding long-term biodiversity protection measures.

Future phases will see the network’s capabilities expand through advanced real-time tracking technologies, enhanced rescue team training and international partnerships to manage complex wildlife emergencies. Public engagement and community participation remain paramount to the network’s success, reinforcing the essential role citizens play as conservation partners.
