Sharjah Fish Resources Authority celebrates maritime heritage at Sir Bu Nair Festival

The authority concludes a compelling two week participation in the 26th edition of the festival, presenting an enriching programme of educational initiatives and interactive experiences that honour the UAE's seafaring legacy.

The Sharjah Fish Resources Authority has concluded its participation in the 26th edition of the Sir Bu Nair Festival, a prestigious celebration of the nation’s maritime heritage and environmental stewardship. Held at Al Heera Beach from 7th to 18th October 2026, the festival was organised by the Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority and provided an exceptional platform for advancing public understanding of fisheries and the UAE’s distinguished seafaring traditions.

Throughout the festival, the authority’s pavilion presented an comprehensive array of educational offerings and interactive experiences. Visitors gained enlightening insights into fisheries development projects whilst engaging with two specially curated publications: the Aquaculture Booklet, Part One, exploring fish farming practices, and the Local Fish Guide, both designed to foster greater knowledge of marine resources and the imperative of their conservation.

Recognising the importance of engaging younger audiences, the authority organised three captivating workshops for children, each thoughtfully conceived around marine themes. Face painting, “Make Your Own Fish” and “Glowing Coral” proved immensely popular, offering young participants creative and memorable experiences that cultivated appreciation for the nation’s aquatic environment.

The authority further enriched the festival programme through two distinguished discussion sessions. “Memories of the Sea” and “Pearls: Our Precious Treasure” explored the profound significance of the UAE’s maritime heritage, celebrating the experiences and legacies of seafaring communities whose endeavours have shaped the nation’s distinguished history.

Ali Ahmed Abu Ghazin, Chairman of Sharjah Fish Resources Authority, reflected upon the festival’s profound value as an occasion for honouring the UAE’s maritime legacy and introducing younger generations to the remarkable lives of seafaring communities. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, for his visionary leadership and steadfast commitment to environmental protection and the preservation of Emirati heritage. He noted that a 2000 Emiri decree designating Sir Bu Nair Island as a nature reserve exemplifies this dual commitment to safeguarding the natural environment whilst celebrating the nation’s cultural treasures.
