etisalat UAE, Khalifa University and NYU Abu Dhabi unveil groundbreaking engineering framework for 6G networks

A collaborative research milestone positions the UAE as a key architect in global 6G development, establishing practical methodologies for next-generation network design and deployment.

The United Arab Emirates has reinforced its pivotal role in shaping the future of global telecommunications through an extraordinary collaborative achievement. etisalat UAE, Khalifa University of Science and Technology and New York University Abu Dhabi have unveiled a transformative, peer-reviewed engineering framework for designing and dimensioning future 6G networks, representing a significant milestone in the anticipated 2030 launch of this revolutionary technology.

This pioneering work represents a fundamental departure from theoretical conceptualisation, translating emerging centimetre-wave spectrum technology into practical engineering methodologies that telecommunications operators can implement with confidence. The research provides comprehensive guidance across coverage planning, capacity dimensioning, link-budget design and advanced antenna architectures, addressing the essential question that has long preoccupied the industry: precisely how should an operator design and dimension a commercial 6G network?

Dr. Bayan Sharif, Provost of Khalifa University, emphasised the profound significance of academic-industry collaboration. The research exemplifies how universities can channel scientific expertise toward real-world challenges, advancing knowledge and technologies that will define the future of global connectivity whilst reinforcing national capabilities.

Marwan Bin Shakar, Chief Technology Officer of etisalat UAE, highlighted how this work transforms 6G vision into actionable network design. The framework demonstrates how existing infrastructure can evolve intelligently to support next-generation networks, establishing a practical blueprint grounded in engineering rigour rather than optimistic speculation.

The research demonstrates remarkable technical achievements: through strategic deployment of advanced Extremely Large Aperture Arrays at 7 GHz centimetre-wave frequencies, operators can achieve complete coverage parity with existing 5G infrastructure whilst delivering a threefold capacity increase. This represents a capital-efficient pathway to 6G that circumvents the necessity for extensive network densification.

Published in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Open Journal of the Communications Society, the framework represents a significant progression from conceptual 6G visions to the engineering foundations essential for real-world deployment. The methodology accommodates the emerging U6GHz ecosystem and higher upper-mid-band spectrum, providing a flexible foundation as global standards continue to evolve.

Fabio Piano, Vice Chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi, described the partnership as exemplifying the extraordinary value achieved when universities and the private sector unite their expertise toward breakthrough innovation. The collaboration strengthens the position of the UAE as a primary architect of the global digital future.
