Sharjah Film Platform Unveils Ninth Edition Celebrating Global Cinema

The Sharjah Film Platform returns with a curated selection of 26 international films, bringing together emerging and established filmmakers from across the world for ten days of cinematic excellence.

The ninth edition of the Sharjah Film Platform, orchestrated by the Sharjah Art Foundation, unfolds as a celebration of contemporary filmmaking, presenting twenty six international films from October 30 through November 8. This distinguished festival draws together emerging creative voices and established professionals from the United Arab Emirates, Palestine, Lebanon, Kazakhstan, Mexico, India, Haiti and beyond, fostering a vibrant dialogue around world cinema.

Distributed across two distinguished venues, the festival inhabits the intimate confines of Mirage City Cinema in Sharjah’s historic quarter, alongside the expansive screens of VOX Cinemas at City Centre Al Zahia. This carefully considered selection of venues reflects the festival’s commitment to accessibility and cultural accessibility for audiences across the emirate.

The opening work, Letters, a luminous anthology comprising seventeen short films by Josef Khallouf, embarks upon a contemplative journey through Lebanon’s recent historical landscape. The programme unfolds with remarkable diversity, encompassing David Bim’s To the West, in Zapata, Azeem Rajulawalla’s More Punk Than Punk, and Kapil Tanwar’s Ru Ba Ru, an intimate exploration of human connection, before concluding with Larissa Sansour’s poignant An Incomplete Drowning.

Two distinguished works supported through the Sharjah Film Platform Short Film Production Grant receive their premieres: Asim Abdulaziz’s introspective I Broke a Vase and Fatima Wardy’s evocative White Musk, both celebrating the creative trajectories of emerging Emirati voices.

The Competition section presents a rigorous international selection of documentary and fiction films, curated by an esteemed committee of filmmakers and industry professionals. All titles, released within the past two years, represent their inaugural screening within the Emirates, with distinctions awarded across four categories: Documentary Feature, Documentary Short, Fiction Feature and Fiction Short.

A dedicated Director in Focus programme illuminates the visionary work of filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako, presenting screenings of Timbuktu, Bamako and Black Tea. Sissako graces the festival with a masterclass preceding the Timbuktu screening, offering audiences unprecedented insight into more than three decades of artistic endeavour and creative philosophy.

The First Takes programme demonstrates the festival’s unwavering commitment to nurturing emerging talent, providing emerging filmmakers with screening opportunities, pitching workshops, constructive feedback sessions and invaluable networking interactions with university students throughout the Emirates.
