Asian Football Confederation Leaders Convene in Tokyo to Advance Continental Game

Over one hundred and twenty senior football administrators from across Asia gathered in Japan for the fourth edition of the AFC Member Associations and Regional Associations Presidents' and General Secretaries' Conference, engaging in substantive discussions on governance, innovation and the future trajectory of the sport.

The Asian Football Confederation’s flagship conference assembled this week in Tokyo, bringing together the continent’s most influential football decision-makers for a two-day programme devoted to strengthening governance standards and fostering collaborative advancement across Asian football.

The gathering, which represents the fourth iteration of this prestigious forum, welcomed one hundred and twenty delegates on its opening day. The event provided an exceptional platform for participants to examine critical matters affecting the sport’s development, from leadership and integrity to technological innovation and strategic planning.

The conference commenced with remarks from Japan Football Association President Tsuneyasu Miyamoto, who eloquently articulated the transformative power of shared experience and collective endeavour. He observed that progress within football emerges not solely from individual institutional efforts, but rather through the relationships cultivated, experiences exchanged and lessons learned collaboratively across the confederation’s membership.

AFC General Secretary Datuk Seri Windsor John delivered a comprehensive address emphasising the pivotal contribution of member associations and regional associations in propelling Asian football toward unprecedented achievement. He highlighted recent milestones, including the presence of nine AFC representatives at the forthcoming FIFA World Cup and the historic AFC Women’s Asian Cup staged in Australia. He underscored the confederation’s commitment to supporting members whilst elevating continental standards across both club and representative competitions.

The opening sessions featured presentations from internationally recognised specialists. Jennifer Mellors, Client Partner and Integrity Solutions Manager at Sportradar, examined contemporary challenges in match-fixing detection and the technological advancements enabling organisations to identify suspicious activity at scale across complex, evolving landscapes.

A distinguished panel discussion exploring contemporary leadership examined perspectives from five prominent figures representing the AFC’s five regions: Football Australia President Anter Isaac, JFA President Tsuneyasu Miyamoto, Uzbekistan Football Association Senior Vice President Ravshan Irmatov, Football Sri Lanka President U.L. Jaswar and FIFA Council Member Yasser Hassan M Almisehal. Their discourse encompassed governance frameworks, leadership competencies and emerging opportunities within the rapidly evolving contemporary environment.

Craig Hepburn, Chief Executive Officer and Founding Partner of 1706 Studio, concluded the opening day programme with an illuminating presentation examining artificial intelligence applications within football organisations, exploring how such technology might enhance strategic planning and operational excellence.

The conference will continue on Thursday with additional sessions addressing women’s football development, referee advancement, practical AI implementation, football’s contribution to societal objectives, competition strategy and the AFC Asian Cup scheduled for Saudi Arabia in 2027.
