Dhow Racing and the Soul of Abu Dhabi

There is something profoundly moving about the sight of traditional sailing dhows cutting through the waters of Al Dhafra, their wooden hulls and billowed sails carrying forward the maritime legacy of the Emirates. This autumn, as the ninth edition of the Al Dhafra Dhow Race takes shape, we are witnessing once again the deliberate and graceful act of cultural preservation in motion.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region, has recently met with representatives of Abu Dhabi Sports Council to review preparations for this storied competition, which focuses on the 60 foot sailing dhow category. The occasion afforded opportunity to reflect on something essential: the way that heritage sports serve as living threads connecting us to our ancestors and binding the present to the past.

Traditional maritime sports are far more than recreation. They embody the resourcefulness, the seamanship and the courage of generations who depended upon the sea for their survival and their prosperity. In preserving these practices, in teaching them anew to younger minds and hands, we affirm something fundamental about who we are.

Alongside the racing itself, the festival encompasses cultural and heritage programmes and sporting events that frame the competition within a broader narrative of Emirati identity. This layered approach recognises that tradition thrives not in isolation but in community, in celebration, in the transmission of knowledge from one generation to the next.
