Abu Dhabi’s Sustainable Schools Initiative Engages Students in Environmental Stewardship

The Sustainable Schools Initiative, launched by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, has empowered students across the emirate to contribute meaningfully to environmental efforts throughout the 2025-2026 academic year. The programme demonstrates the tangible impact of fostering environmental consciousness among young learners, with participation metrics reflecting growing engagement and commitment to sustainability within educational institutions.
A notable 54 per cent increase in participation within Eco Clubs underscores the initiative’s success in cultivating interest among students. This expansion reflects a deepening recognition among the student body of their role in addressing environmental challenges and their capacity to effect positive change within their school communities.
The initiative has also mobilised widespread student involvement in environmental assessment activities. A total of 25,462 students have participated in evaluating the environmental impact of their schools, a comprehensive engagement that extends across the academic year. This participatory approach to environmental assessment equips students with practical experience in sustainability evaluation and fosters a proactive understanding of how schools can operate more responsibly.
Through this initiative, students gain direct exposure to environmental practices and decision making, cultivating awareness that extends beyond the classroom. The programme reflects a commitment to nurturing informed, environmentally conscious citizens who recognise their agency in shaping a more sustainable future for Abu Dhabi.
