Sharjah's Power Infrastructure Advances with Two New Substations and Fifteen Projects Under Way

Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority marks progress on a substantial modernisation programme, commissioning new distribution facilities and advancing work on fifteen substations across the emirate to support continued urban and economic growth.

The steady expansion of Sharjah’s electrical infrastructure reflects the emirate’s commitment to meeting the energy demands of its residents and thriving commercial sectors. Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority has marked a significant milestone by commissioning two new 33 kV electricity distribution substations: one operating under an advanced pilot system and the first phase of the Industrial Area 3 ‘A’ facility, with the second phase approximately 95 per cent complete.

This latest development forms part of a broader capital investment programme. Fifteen additional substations, each operating at 33/11 kV capacity, are progressing at a combined cost of AED381,513,038, with four of these facilities anticipated to reach completion before the year closes. The geographical distribution of these new installations across different areas of Sharjah ensures that future residential communities, commercial expansions and development projects will benefit from enhanced network capacity and improved reliability.

Engineer Hamad Al Tunaiji, Director of SEWA’s Power Transmission Department, emphasised that the substations represent the authority’s strategic commitment to network efficiency and sustainable service delivery. The facilities are designed to accommodate increasing electrical loads whilst maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety. This ongoing modernisation effort underscores SEWA’s role in fueling Sharjah’s continued development, as we reported in our coverage of major electricity transmission projects completed worth AED341.493 million.

Engineer Abdullah Al Koos, Deputy Director of SEWA’s Power Transmission Department, confirmed that the projects are advancing smoothly and on schedule, supported by meticulous engineering oversight and technical expertise. He noted that SEWA’s sustained investments in substation infrastructure reflect the authority’s dedication to delivering exceptional service to residents, citizens and the key economic sectors that drive Sharjah’s prosperity.

The authority’s infrastructure programme builds upon earlier achievements, including the completion of a comprehensive maintenance programme for 138 substations, demonstrating a holistic approach to both new development and asset preservation.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

Though these projects are specific to Sharjah, they reflect the broader commitment across the Emirates to intelligent infrastructure development. SEWA’s investment in substations and electrical distribution systems exemplifies how the emirates collaborate on energy security and shared standards of technical excellence that benefit the entire region.

The modernisation of power distribution networks across the emirates supports the UAE’s larger economic and sustainability objectives. As communities expand and economic activity intensifies, the reliability of electrical infrastructure becomes fundamental to quality of life and business continuity. SEWA’s methodical approach to upgrading substations whilst maintaining service excellence offers a model for how infrastructure can evolve responsibly alongside urban development.
