Archipelago of Whispers: A Conversation in Sound and Silence

There is a particular kind of listening that happens when we encounter the unfamiliar. It requires us to set aside what we think we know and open ourselves to new forms of understanding. At 421 Arts Campus, a thoughtfully conceived exhibition named Archipelago of Whispers creates precisely this space for contemplation and discovery.
Curated by Deniz Kirkali and Elham Puriya Mehr, the exhibition reshapes our expectations of what an art experience might be. Rather than presenting objects meant solely for visual consumption, the works here speak in whispered words and whale songs, in the quiet cadence of voices and the resonance of the natural world. These are not traditional narratives, but fragments of knowledge transmitted through channels both intimate and vast, inviting visitors to consider how communication shapes understanding itself.
What distinguishes this undertaking is its participatory generosity. The exhibition does not exist as a finished thought, sealed off from those who encounter it. Instead, visitors are invited to contribute through a curatorial gesture of elegant simplicity. By typing a few sentences on an iPad within the courtyard, one’s words may find their way onto a screen, becoming part of the living conversation that the exhibition continues to generate. It is a gesture that acknowledges the visitor not as a passive observer but as an essential voice in the unfolding of the work.
Archipelago of Whispers remains on view until January 10, 2027, and admission is complimentary. Those wishing to visit may book through the campus.
