UAE Charts Course for Unified Gulf Media Strategy at Regional Ministers’ Gathering

UAE Charts Course for Unified Gulf Media Strategy at Regional Ministers' Gathering

Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed, Chairman of the National Media Authority, convenes with fellow GCC information ministers to advance coordinated media cooperation and strengthen regional resilience against misinformation.

The 29th Meeting of GCC Information Ministers gathered today in Manama, bringing together the region’s leading media voices to chart a course toward deeper integration and shared purpose. Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed, Chairman of the National Media Authority, led the UAE delegation to the summit, where discussions centred on transforming how Gulf states approach media cooperation in an era of rapid digital change and evolving geopolitical complexity.

The conversation moved beyond the familiar terrain of coordinated messaging toward something more ambitious: a strategic reimagining of how Gulf media institutions might work in genuine partnership. Participants reviewed the progress of the Strategic Plan for Joint Media Cooperation 2023–2030, examined proposals from member states and the GCC General Secretariat, and considered the annual reports of the GCC Joint Programme Production Institution and the Gulf Radio and TV Organisation.

Al Hamed articulated a vision of media as something far more consequential than simply broadcasting news. As he noted, media shapes public awareness and influences public discourse, making it an essential partner in addressing the region’s challenges and delivering credible, professional content that reflects shared destiny and collective aspirations. He stressed that strengthening Gulf media integration remains a strategic necessity, essential to reinforcing unity, safeguarding common interests and protecting the achievements of GCC states amid geopolitical developments across the region.

The discussion reflected ongoing concerns about the digital environment and the threats posed by misinformation. Al Hamed called for coordinated efforts to counter disinformation and digital practices aimed at undermining trust among Gulf societies. This resonates with earlier discussions about AI preparedness and misinformation risks that have become increasingly central to the region’s media strategy.

The UAE position, as articulated by Al Hamed, distinguishes between uniformity and unity. “Media cooperation does not mean identical messages, but rather clarity on shared principles and complementary roles,” he said, emphasising that the current period requires translating Gulf consensus into practical initiatives supported by specific responsibilities and effective follow-up mechanisms. Beyond mere position coordination, he advocated for genuine effort integration through common standards for media content, greater exchange of digital content and expertise, enhanced media dialogue programmes and effective regional and international partnerships.

The meeting also explored opportunities for broader collaboration, including proposals to organise a GCC-Egypt Media Forum, further develop the Gulf Media Dialogues Programme and strengthen partnerships with brotherly and friendly countries. The UAE delegation, which included Fahad Mohammed Salem bin Kardous Al Ameri, UAE Ambassador to Bahrain; Mohammed Saeed Al Shehhi, NMA Secretary-General; and Maitha Al Suwaidi, Executive Director of NMA’s Media Regulation Sector, contributed to these discussions with a focus on moving from reactive to anticipatory approaches.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

For the UAE, this meeting represents a significant moment in positioning media as a frontline institution for national security and regional stability. By leading the charge toward integrated Gulf media cooperation, Abu Dhabi reinforces its commitment to professional, responsible journalism while strengthening the collective ability of GCC states to protect their common interests. The emphasis on moving beyond coordination toward genuine integration aligns with the UAE’s broader vision of institutional excellence and coordinated regional action.

The outcomes of this gathering will likely shape how UAE media institutions engage with their Gulf counterparts over the coming years, particularly around content standards, expertise sharing and the critical challenge of countering misinformation. This reflects a maturation of media strategy that recognises media and education as foundational to societal resilience, positioning Abu Dhabi as a thoughtful steward of both national interests and regional stability.
