Al Jalila Foundation's Headquarters Earns LEED Gold for Sustainable Operations

The foundation's commitment to environmental stewardship has been recognised through one of the world's most respected green building certifications, reflecting Dubai Health's dedication to operational excellence and ecological responsibility.

Environmental sustainability has become a defining measure of institutional excellence, and Al Jalila Foundation’s headquarters now bears the mark of that commitment. The building has received LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council, awarded under the stringent LEED EBOM rating system that evaluates existing buildings across operations, maintenance, energy efficiency, water consumption and indoor environmental quality.

The certification recognises a year’s worth of measured performance data, including energy and water usage, waste management and air quality standards. During its assessment period, the building consumed approximately 3.16 million gallons of water, meeting the rigorous benchmarks required for Gold status. The achievement reflects what Dubai Health describes as the integration of Care, Learning, Discovery, and Giving, principles that now extend to how the institution manages its physical environment.

A series of thoughtfully implemented measures underpins the certification. Photovoltaic solar panels installed across parking areas generate clean renewable energy, whilst energy-efficient LED lighting with centralised control systems reduces consumption throughout the facility. The building operates on a district cooling system, further optimising resource use. Indoor air quality is continuously monitored through carbon dioxide assessment and chemical compound analysis in keeping with LEED standards, and green cleaning practices support both environmental and occupational health.

The foundation partnered with Positive Zero, an energy transition company serving the Gulf Cooperation Council region, to realise these improvements. As we reported in our coverage of the foundation’s AED19.25 million commitment to paediatric cancer care, Al Jalila Foundation’s institutional vision extends across multiple dimensions of human wellbeing. This sustainability certification demonstrates that commitment to health encompasses the environments in which care, learning and discovery take place.

Dr. Amer Al Zarooni, Chief Executive Officer of Al Jalila Foundation, reflected that the certification affirms sustainability as a core operational principle rather than a peripheral goal, whilst David Auriau, Chief Executive Officer of Positive Zero, noted that the integrated approach to on-site solar generation, efficiency measures and smart building controls delivers measurable improvements aligned with the UAE’s broader sustainability ambitions.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

The certification signals the practical integration of global environmental standards into the UAE’s leading healthcare and research institutions. Al Jalila Foundation’s achievement demonstrates that advanced medical facilities can operate with minimal environmental impact, combining renewable energy generation, intelligent building systems and conscientious resource management without compromising operational effectiveness or the quality of the spaces where staff and visitors spend their time.

The recognition reinforces Dubai Health’s institutional positioning as an institution that meets the highest global standards in both medical excellence and environmental stewardship, setting a template for how specialised healthcare facilities can contribute meaningfully to the emirate’s sustainability objectives whilst maintaining their primary mission of advancing human health.
