Ajman’s Environment Conference Crystallises Vision of Carbon Neutrality Through Innovation and Cooperation

Ajman's Environment Conference Crystallises Vision of Carbon Neutrality Through Innovation and Cooperation

The Eighth Ajman International Environment Conference concludes with a comprehensive framework for achieving sustainability, endorsed by 1,500 delegates and 40 global experts who mapped the practical pathways from climate commitment to environmental action.

The Sheikh Zayed Centre for Conferences and Exhibitions at Ajman University became the nexus of international environmental dialogue as the Eighth Ajman International Environment Conference drew to a close on 29 October. Over two days, the gathering brought together over 1,500 attendees and more than 40 speakers from 15 countries to examine the delicate interplay between scientific research, technological innovation and sustainable urban development. The conference’s theme, ‘From Commitment to Implementation: Towards Sustainability, Enhanced Climate Resilience and Carbon Neutrality’, captured the essential shift from aspirational pledges to tangible environmental action.

Five key recommendations emerged as the intellectual cornerstone of the conference’s conclusions. These priorities centre on advancing circular economy principles, deploying advanced technologies to diminish carbon emissions, harnessing artificial intelligence for environmental governance, establishing smart monitoring systems and broadening green infrastructure solutions across the emirate. As we reported in our coverage of Ajman’s integrated sustainability strategy and Circular Economy Platform launch, these recommendations now crystallise the strategic direction that was introduced during the conference itself, offering practical mechanisms through which environmental goals become operational reality.

The scientific programme demonstrated considerable sophistication in its approach to contemporary challenges. Five dedicated sessions examined sustainable urban development and low-carbon planning, climate adaptation and nature-based solutions, artificial intelligence in environmental governance, the integration of green infrastructure with renewable energy systems, and enhanced urban resilience. Six workshops explored the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence in environmental monitoring, carbon management frameworks, product lifecycle assessment and the translation of climate commitments into localised, implementable action.

Ajman’s environmental progress underpins these discussions with measurable achievement. The emirate has recorded a 10 per cent reduction in carbon emissions whilst maintaining an air quality index of 98 per cent, outcomes reflecting the systematic development of environmental management systems and the adoption of sustainable practices. Dr Engineer Khalid Moeen Al Hosani, Executive Director of the Public Health and Environment Sector and Chairman of the Conference’s Higher Committee, honoured the conference speakers in recognition of their scientific contributions and their role in enriching the exchange of expertise across borders.

The conference’s commitment to embedding environmental consciousness across generations found expression through the Zero Carbon Schools Initiative assessment activities, conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and involving thirty public and private schools. The initiative extends across more than 85 schools throughout the emirate, encouraging educational institutions to adopt practices that reduce their carbon footprint whilst strengthening the education sector’s role in cultivating environmental responsibility among young people. Participating schools presented their environmental projects before a specialised evaluation committee operating according to unified criteria encompassing energy and water conservation, waste management and recycling, and environmental awareness development.

The conference’s outcomes align with Ajman Vision 2030, the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030, particularly those addressing sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, and climate action. The recommendations affirm the importance of circular economy principles and call for expanded deployment of advanced technologies, greater application of artificial intelligence in environmental monitoring and data analytics, and the development of smart environmental monitoring systems that contribute to informed decision making and improved air quality.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

Ajman’s environmental framework extends significance beyond its boundaries as a model for integrated sustainable development across the Emirates. The conference affirmed the importance of building scientific outcomes into practical environmental initiatives whilst strengthening cooperation among government entities, academic institutions and the private sector. The methodical approach to measuring progress—evidenced through the emirate’s 10 per cent carbon emission reduction and elevated air quality metrics—demonstrates that environmental stewardship and economic growth need not exist in tension. These principles and technologies discussed at the conference represent shared knowledge resources for the broader UAE sustainability agenda.

The emphasis on embedding environmental consciousness through education, particularly through the Zero Carbon Schools Initiative, extends the ripple effects of the conference into the UAE’s educational fabric. By engaging more than 85 schools in carbon reduction practices and environmental awareness development, Ajman is cultivating a generation equipped with the values and practical skills necessary to sustain the nation’s environmental commitments. This intergenerational transfer of environmental responsibility strengthens the collective capacity across all emirates to achieve the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy and contributes to building communities and cities that prove resilient in the face of climate challenges.
