Ajman Charts New Course in Sustainability with Environment Conference and Circular Economy Platform

Ajman Charts New Course in Sustainability with Environment Conference and Circular Economy Platform

The eighth edition of Ajman's flagship environmental gathering brings together international experts to translate climate commitments into tangible action, as the emirate unveils an integrated strategy for carbon neutrality and resource management.

The Sheikh Zayed Centre for Conferences and Exhibitions at Ajman University resonated with the concerns of our time as environmental leaders, researchers and decision-makers from across the globe gathered to address the pressing challenges of climate change and resource management. The occasion marked the opening of the Ajman 8th International Environment Conference, an assembly that reflects the emirate’s deepening commitment to transforming environmental ambition into measurable practice.

H.H. Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman and Chairman of the Executive Council, presided over proceedings that included the launch of two significant initiatives. The Circular Economy Platform, developed in cooperation with Al Serkal Company, offers a digital framework for managing the lifecycle of recyclable resources, addressing the intersection of sustainability and innovation. Alongside this, the Ajman 360 Sustainability Strategy establishes an integrated approach to environmental stewardship across four principal pillars: air quality and emissions, climate change, waste management and biodiversity.

The conference drew more than forty speakers whose expertise spans scientific research, policy-making and institutional sustainability. Their participation underscores a fundamental shift in how environmental challenges are approached within the region: moving beyond the articulation of targets towards the implementation of solutions that deliver measurable outcomes. This philosophy echoes through the conference theme itself, “From Commitment to Implementation: Towards Sustainability, Enhanced Climate Resilience and Carbon Neutrality.”

A distinctive feature of Ajman’s environmental journey emerges in its engagement with educational institutions. Five schools received recognition for achieving Zero Carbon Schools standards: City American School, Zayed Al Ruqayeb Complex, Crown School, Habitat School and Ibn Taymiyyah School. These institutions represent part of a broader movement across more than eighty-five schools in Ajman that have adopted practical environmental standards designed to reduce carbon footprints within their communities. The emphasis on embedding sustainability within educational environments reflects a recognition that climate action requires cultural transformation across generations.

The conference also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Ajman Municipality and Planning Department and Tribe Consulting concerning the production of energy from waste. This agreement signals a commitment to advanced circular economy principles, transforming residual resources into valuable assets whilst strengthening knowledge exchange in environmental fields.

H.H. Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi honoured recipients of the third edition of the Humaid bin Rashid International Sustainability Award, an accolade that attracted approximately four hundred and fifty entries from entities and institutions across the UAE and beyond. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, received the Environmental Personality Award. Dr Hadeel Al Shourji was recognised for the Best Research Award, whilst the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure secured first place in the Sustainable Institutions category. Student Layan Abdullah received the Innovative Ideas Award, reflecting the breadth of recognition across scientific, institutional and emerging talent.

In remarks during the opening, H.H. Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi emphasised that environmental protection represents a shared responsibility demanding integrated efforts and expertise. The conference, he noted, provides an essential platform for knowledge exchange and partnership building, strengthening cities’ capacity to address climate challenges and adapt to future changes. The continuation of this gathering through its eighth edition, he suggested, testifies to the importance of sustaining scientific dialogue and developing cooperation pathways that combine rigorous research with practical implementation.

The scientific programme encompassed five key thematic areas: climate change adaptation, nature-based urban solutions, sustainable urban development, low-carbon planning, and green infrastructure and renewable energy. Sessions also examined the emerging role of artificial intelligence in environmental governance and monitoring, acknowledging how technological advancement supports climate resilience and risk reduction.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

Ajman’s environmental leadership creates a template for the broader emirates as the UAE pursues its trajectory towards sustainability and carbon neutrality. The launch of the Circular Economy Platform and the Ajman 360 Sustainability Strategy represent practical models that address interconnected environmental challenges through integrated governance. By embedding sustainability within educational institutions, Ajman contributes to the cultural shift essential for the nation’s long-term environmental objectives.

The international participation in the conference, alongside partnerships with entities such as Tribe Consulting and Al Serkal Company, strengthens the knowledge ecosystem across the emirates. As Ajman demonstrated in its Artificial Intelligence Lab, which we reported on in recent months, the emirate’s investment in practical innovation extends across multiple sectors. These environmental initiatives reinforce Abu Dhabi’s regional position as the UAE advances its sustainable development agenda through coordinated effort and scientific rigour.
