Building a Sustainability-Literate Workforce: BEEAH and Sharjah’s New Certification Path

Building a Sustainability-Literate Workforce: BEEAH and Sharjah's New Certification Path

A landmark partnership launches a comprehensive professional development programme designed to embed sustainability thinking into the operational DNA of organisations across the UAE and beyond.

The knowledge that organisations need to thrive in a resource-conscious future demands more than goodwill. It requires professionals equipped with a sophisticated understanding of how sustainability integrates into strategy, policy and decision-making at every level. This month, BEEAH and the Sharjah Department of Human Resources formalised a partnership that addresses precisely this need, launching the Sustainability Certification Programme during the 2026 Sharjah Next: Sustainability forum.

The initiative reflects a broader recognition that the UAE’s sustainability ambitions, including the Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, depend fundamentally on human capital. The programme transforms this principle into practice, offering a self-paced certification comprising eight interconnected modules available in both Arabic and English. Participants progress through Sustainability 101, Principles of ESG in the Modern Economy, Transitioning to a Circular Economy, Climate Action, Sustainable Development Goals, Innovation and Technology for Sustainability, Net-Zero Strategies and the Power of Collaboration and Partnerships. Each module concludes with a knowledge assessment, allowing learners to retake the evaluation until achieving full mastery.

The curriculum integrates sustainability concepts and frameworks with case studies and practical examples drawn from the UAE, the Gulf Cooperation Council region and further afield, ensuring that learning translates directly into organisational application. Upon successful completion of all eight modules, professionals receive a certificate jointly issued by both entities.

Abdullah Ibrahim Al Zaabi, Chairman of the Department of Human Resources, emphasised that Sharjah’s vision places professional development alongside academic education as essential to building an adaptable workforce capable of meeting evolving challenges. Hind Al Huwaidi, Chief Executive Development Officer at BEEAH, described the programme as a crucial step in translating sustainability ambitions into the daily operations, planning and decision-making processes of organisations, ultimately building workforce resilience and confidence in navigating future complexities.

The partnership agreement was signed by Al Zaabi and Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO and Vice Chairman of BEEAH, in the presence of senior representatives from both organisations. Notably, the initiative builds on BEEAH’s expanding partnerships across the sustainability landscape; as we reported in October, the organisation joined forces with specialist firm Soma Mater to expand sustainability advisory capabilities, while a partnership with EKTIFA advanced circular economy practices in Sharjah’s agricultural sector.

In its inaugural phase, the programme serves Sharjah Government employees exclusively, positioning them as practitioners and advocates of integrated sustainability thinking. The design reflects confidence in subsequent expansion across public and private sector organisations throughout the UAE and the wider region, responding to a demonstrable growing need for professionals who understand sustainability and can apply it meaningfully within their work environments.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

While the programme launches in Sharjah, its regional expansion carries implications for Abu Dhabi’s own workforce development and sustainability initiatives. As organisations across the Emirates increasingly prioritise integrated sustainability in their operations, a standardised, high-quality certification programme creates a common language and shared framework for professional development, strengthening the talent pool available to Abu Dhabi employers in both public and private sectors.

The programme’s emphasis on practical application and organisational resilience aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader economic diversification and sustainability goals. A workforce equipped to embed sustainability principles into strategic planning and decision-making supports the emirate’s aspirations for long-term economic competitiveness while advancing environmental and social objectives central to the UAE’s Net Zero commitment.
