Abu Dhabi Customs Receives Regional Digital Excellence Award for Invisible Customs Innovation

Abu Dhabi Customs Receives Regional Digital Excellence Award for Invisible Customs Innovation

The General Administration of Abu Dhabi Customs has been recognised at the GCC Digital Government Award 2026 for its transformative Invisible Customs initiative, marking a significant achievement in regional digital governance.

A quiet revolution is unfolding in how customs operates across Abu Dhabi. Rather than the conventional interchange of paperwork and manual procedures, a new model is emerging, one that places intelligence and seamless integration at its heart. This transformation has now been formally recognised, with the General Administration of Abu Dhabi Customs receiving the Digitally Distinguished Government Entity award at the seventh edition of the GCC Digital Government Award 2026, held in Bahrain.

The recognition specifically honours the Invisible Customs initiative, a flagship programme designed to reshape customs operations through smart technology and digital integration. By reducing manual intervention and conventional administrative procedures, the initiative delivers faster, more flexible and efficient services whilst maintaining rigorous standards of customs control, compliance and security. The result is a more seamless experience for customers, underpinned by sophisticated systems that work quietly in the background.

Abu Dhabi Customs was the sole government entity within the UAE delegation to receive the Winner distinction at this year’s awards, a testament to the calibre of its digital transformation efforts. The achievement reflects broader progress in developing innovative operating models that combine advanced technologies with digital integration to enhance operational efficiency, service quality and customer experience.

Obaid Musallem Al Ameri, Acting Director General of Abu Dhabi Customs, described the award as a reflection of the UAE’s leadership vision and Abu Dhabi Government’s commitment to digital transformation and artificial intelligence. “This recognition reinforces our responsibility to continue developing world-class customs solutions through innovation, digital integration and strategic partnerships,” he noted, emphasising how advanced technologies create tangible value for the economy and society.

The Invisible Customs initiative sits within a broader ecosystem of digital excellence across the emirates. As we reported, Dubai Customs has achieved a cashless payment transaction rate of 99.3% in the first half of 2026, reinforcing the region’s position as a global leader in digital financial integration. Abu Dhabi Customs has similarly pursued strategic innovation through partnerships, including collaboration with Khalifa University Enterprises to advance customs operations through artificial intelligence and research.

The award acknowledges more than technical achievement. It signals Abu Dhabi Customs’ evolution into a strategic partner in sustainable economic development, strengthening the emirate’s standing as a leading global trade hub. The organisation continues to pursue its ambition to become a World-Class Customs Authority, reinforcing collaboration with both public and private sector partners to improve supply chain efficiency and economic competitiveness.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

This regional recognition underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to digital governance and innovation as engines of economic growth. The Invisible Customs initiative demonstrates how government institutions can harness advanced technologies to create tangible improvements in service delivery and operational efficiency, setting a standard for public sector digital transformation across the Gulf region.

For Abu Dhabi’s economy, the significance runs deeper still. Enhanced customs operations, powered by smart systems and reduced bureaucratic friction, strengthen the emirate’s competitiveness in global trade. By improving supply chain efficiency and customer experience, Abu Dhabi Customs reinforces the conditions necessary for sustainable economic development and positions the emirate as an increasingly attractive destination for international commerce and investment.
