The 2026–27 season opens Friday with 16 race meetings spanning five months, drawing international trainers and competitors to one of global thoroughbred racing's most prestigious fixtures.
As autumn settles over the Emirates, Meydan Racecourse readies itself for the return of the Dubai Racing Carnival, that most prestigious occasion when the world’s finest racing talent descends upon Dubai to compete at the highest level. The new season commences on Friday, 6 November, marking the beginning of a remarkable five-month programme that will see 16 race meetings unfold across the winter and spring months.
The Carnival has become something of a phenomenon in global thoroughbred racing circles, drawing competitors from across multiple continents who regard participation as among the most coveted opportunities in the sport. The previous season proved this point conclusively: trainers representing ten different racing jurisdictions brought 130 overseas-trained horses to Dubai, a figure accounting for more than 20 per cent of all runners, with winners ultimately representing five different nations. This unprecedented international diversity speaks to the Carnival’s expanding reputation as a level on which the very best in the world choose to race.
Sheikh Rashed bin Dalmook Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Racing Club, reflects on this achievement with a sense of purpose. “The Dubai Racing Carnival reflects Dubai’s ambition to bring the world together through sporting excellence and provide an international platform for the world’s leading racing talent to compete,” he noted. The Club’s focus remains on elevating both the quality and international reach of the Carnival whilst ensuring that every visitor to Meydan experiences something of genuine distinction.
The season will be anchored by three particularly significant feature days: Festive Friday, Fashion Friday and Emirates Super Saturday, each offering a particular flavour of hospitality and entertainment alongside the racing itself. The entire programme culminates in the 31st edition of the Dubai World Cup on Saturday, 27 March 2027, that most celebrated of all race days, featuring nine races and a combined prize purse of US$30.5 million.
H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, recognised the Carnival’s significance within Dubai’s sporting calendar. “The Dubai Racing Carnival is a key fixture on the equestrian calendar and reflects Dubai’s position as a leading global hub for sporting events,” he observed, noting that the event attracts not merely participants but visitors and global attention, thereby showcasing Dubai’s capability to host occasions of the highest calibre.
Several prominent trainers have already confirmed their participation in the forthcoming season, a testament to the event’s growing international appeal. As we reported earlier, celebrated British jockey Richard Mullen returns to the Carnival following his recovery from serious injuries, commencing his 28th racing season and adding to the distinguished field of competitors who will grace Meydan’s turf.
The partnership with Emirates, which continues as principal sponsor of the opening night and the Dubai World Cup itself, has played an enduring role in the development of racing at Meydan and in strengthening its international standing. The Club has also expressed gratitude to its extended network of partners and sponsors, including Longines, DP World, Azizi Developments, Al Tayer Motors and Emaar, whose collective support makes such an ambitious season possible.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
The Dubai Racing Carnival represents a significant moment for the wider Emirates, demonstrating the region’s capacity to attract and host world-class sporting talent at the highest level. The event’s growing international participation reflects the UAE’s broader position as a premier destination for elite competition, drawing competitors and visitors from across the globe and generating considerable attention for the region’s sporting infrastructure and hospitality.
For the racing community within the Emirates, the Carnival’s expanding reach creates opportunities for local connections with the international racing world. The participation of trainers, jockeys and owners from ten different racing jurisdictions elevates the competitive experience available at Meydan and reinforces Dubai’s standing as a place where the sport’s finest gather to compete.
