The Abu Dhabi Centre for the Arabic Language and New York University Abu Dhabi have launched the second edition of the Balanced Arabic Readability Evaluation Corpus, known as BAREC, a project that harnesses artificial intelligence to reshape the landscape of Arabic language accessibility and education.
The initiative introduces AI-powered tools designed to rewrite Arabic texts according to varying levels of reading proficiency. This technological advancement serves to address a significant need within both the education sector and the broader content creation industry, enabling educators, publishers and digital platforms to tailor written material to diverse audiences with different linguistic capabilities.
By automating the process of adjusting text complexity, BAREC reduces the manual effort traditionally required to make Arabic content accessible to learners at different stages of language acquisition. The system considers factors such as vocabulary difficulty, sentence structure and conceptual complexity, allowing texts to maintain their essential meaning whilst becoming comprehensible to younger readers, language learners and those with varying educational backgrounds.
The second edition of the project reflects ongoing refinement and development of the technology, incorporating advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve the accuracy and quality of text adaptation. This progression demonstrates a commitment to creating sustainable solutions that benefit both individual learners and content producers working across educational institutions, publishing houses and digital media platforms.
The collaboration between the Abu Dhabi Centre for the Arabic Language and New York University Abu Dhabi combines institutional expertise in linguistics, technology and education, bringing together perspectives that strengthen the project’s methodological foundation and practical application.
