Balaa: A Study in Layered Emotion

READY
Read by Emma, the Simply Abu Dhabi narrator.
There is a particular kind of looking that requires patience, a willingness to let the eye move slowly across a surface and find meaning in accumulated marks. Juma Alhaj’s ‘Balaa’, on view at 421 Arts Campus, demands exactly this kind of attention. The title draws from the Arabic word for hardship, trial and affliction, yet what unfolds across its two canvases is far more nuanced than a simple meditation on suffering.
Dense, repeated strokes of ink and acrylic build upon one another, creating a visual language that tracks hardship and joy with equal weight, acknowledging the full spectrum of lived experience. The work does not insist; it accumulates, layer upon layer, inviting the viewer to project their own reflections onto its surface. This is painting as conversation, as a space where personal understanding meets artistic intention.
Positioned as the opening work in the ‘Revelation’ exhibition, ‘Balaa’ functions as a threshold. It sets a contemplative tone for the journey that unfolds beyond, establishing an invitation to move through the galleries with intention and presence. The work asks visitors to slow down, to look more deeply, to consider what emerges when we sit with difficult concepts and allow them space to breathe.
The exhibition remains on view until January 10, 2027, with free admission. Visits may be arranged through the campus.
