Abu Dhabi forges liquefied natural gas partnership to strengthen industrial energy security

Abu Dhabi forges liquefied natural gas partnership to strengthen industrial energy security

The Department of Energy has signed a landmark agreement with private sector partners to explore innovative LNG solutions for industrial facilities, unlocking potential investments of up to AED1 billion and reinforcing the emirate's energy resilience.

At the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference, the Department of Energy has established a cooperation framework with H2G Green Ltd, GasHubUnited Utility Private Ltd, MUZN Energy and CloudEnergi to assess the development and deployment of liquefied natural gas serving Abu Dhabi’s industrial and commercial sectors. The partnership represents a purposeful step toward strengthening energy security whilst supporting the emirate’s broader economic ambitions.

The initiative addresses a tangible need within Abu Dhabi’s evolving industrial landscape: reliable energy supply for facilities situated beyond existing gas distribution networks. Liquefied natural gas offers flexible and dependable alternatives, enabling businesses to maintain operational continuity and expand operations whilst transitioning toward lower-emission fuel sources. This alignment with sustainability objectives reflects the emirate’s commitment to advancing both industrial growth and environmental stewardship.

The partnership will explore how LNG can serve industrial and commercial facilities, supporting maritime and land transport operations, and investigate opportunities to recover and utilise the cold energy generated through LNG processes. Such innovation maximises resource efficiency and introduces greater adaptability into Abu Dhabi’s energy infrastructure. The collaboration could mobilise investments of up to AED1 billion, according to the agreement signed at ADIPEC 2026.

Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Obaidli, Director General of Regulatory Affairs at the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, noted that the collaboration reflects the department’s commitment to leveraging private sector expertise and advanced technologies to explore practical solutions that strengthen energy security and enhance infrastructure readiness. The partnership brings together complementary capabilities: H2G Green will assess commercial opportunities for project development; GasHubUnited will contribute technical and operational expertise in LNG technologies; MUZN Energy will bring local knowledge in developing and operating gas supply solutions for industrial and commercial clients; and CloudEnergi will support the assessment of suitable solutions and manage transportation and distribution. The Department of Energy will facilitate coordination with relevant government entities and help identify sectors and locations suitable for pilot projects.

The collaboration also encompasses training and knowledge transfer initiatives, with the organisations exploring opportunities to build UAE capabilities in engineering, equipment assembly, operations and maintenance. This commitment to developing local expertise strengthens the emirate’s long-term industrial foundation. As we reported in our coverage of Abu Dhabi’s clean energy revolution, the emirate’s renewable and clean energy generation has surged more than 1,000% since 2020, accounting for nearly half of electricity production. This partnership continues that trajectory by diversifying supply options and enabling industries to reduce carbon emissions through cleaner energy solutions.

The initiative reflects Abu Dhabi’s alignment with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategic Initiative. By transitioning industrial facilities from higher-emission fuels to natural gas alternatives, the partnership strengthens both competitiveness in regional and international markets and the emirate’s commitment to sustainable development. LNG also presents safety advantages, dispersing quickly as a lighter-than-air gas and serving as a safer alternative to existing supply systems.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

This partnership positions Abu Dhabi’s industrial sector to access more flexible, reliable and sustainable energy solutions, essential as the emirate’s industrial base continues its expansion. By addressing supply gaps for facilities beyond existing pipeline networks, the collaboration enhances operational resilience across vital industries and supports business continuity and growth ambitions. The potential mobilisation of up to AED1 billion in investment strengthens the economic case for industrial development whilst creating opportunities for skilled employment in engineering, operations and maintenance.

The initiative also reinforces Abu Dhabi’s standing as an energy innovator and a destination for sophisticated industrial development. By combining private sector dynamism with regulatory support and government coordination, the partnership demonstrates how collaboration between public and private sectors can unlock solutions that serve economic growth, energy security and environmental responsibility simultaneously. This approach aligns with broader efforts to diversify energy supply, enhance efficiency and respond to the evolving needs of Abu Dhabi’s vital sectors.
