The Roads and Transport Authority introduces four new traditional abras to its fleet, each engineered to the highest specifications and equipped with smart systems that marry heritage with modern mobility innovation.
There is something quietly elegant about the abra, that slender wooden vessel that has glided across Dubai’s waterways for generations. Now, a new chapter unfolds as the Roads and Transport Authority has welcomed four fourth-generation traditional abras into its marine transport fleet, each one designed to honour the vessel’s storied past while embracing the technological sophistication of contemporary urban mobility.
These new additions represent far more than mere replacements. Each abra accommodates 24 passengers and has been engineered to the highest approved technical and safety standards, fully compliant with the Dubai Universal Design Code. The vessels reflect a thoughtful approach to inclusive travel, with designated areas for People of Determination and design features that ensure comfort and accessibility for all segments of society.
The interior spaces have been thoughtfully reimagined. Upgraded seating and flooring designs make efficient use of the available space, while digital screens displaying real-time information and safety awareness content sit alongside electronic destination boards, a first for this generation of vessels. The integration of smart systems and modern technologies transforms the passenger experience, offering operational clarity whilst raising the standards of service delivery and customer satisfaction.
Khalaf Belghuzooz Al Zarooni, Director of Marine Transport at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, notes that this expansion forms part of a broader strategic vision. These vessels strengthen Dubai’s position as a global exemplar of sustainable mobility and quality of life, reinforcing the emirate’s capacity to offer residents and visitors diverse, safe and comfortable transport options. As part of RTA’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions, as we reported in our coverage of Dubai’s inaugural EV World 2026, the authority continues to advance innovative transport solutions that meet the pace of the city’s growth.
The new abras have secured certificates of conformity with applicable regulations and safety requirements under relevant Gulf Standard Specifications, embodying the highest standards of security, safety and environmental sustainability. Every element has been considered: the design philosophy, the engineering rigour, the passenger experience, and the operational efficiency that allows the service to flourish.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
Dubai’s investment in marine transport modernisation signals a broader regional commitment to integrated, sustainable mobility networks. As the emirate strengthens its position as a leading global city, such investments underscore the UAE’s dedication to advancing public transport infrastructure that serves both residents and the millions of visitors who arrive annually. The emphasis on accessibility and universal design reflects values increasingly central to the region’s approach to development.
The introduction of smart systems and real-time passenger information represents the kind of technological integration that supports the UAE’s wider smart mobility objectives. These innovations enhance operational efficiency whilst improving the user experience, contributing to the broader ecosystem of integrated transport solutions that define modern metropolitan life across the region.
