The lounge as a destination

African Lounge is difficult to reduce to a standard restaurant category, and that is part of its charm. Within the Flamingo Collection at The Galleria Al Maryah Island, it sits alongside Flamingo Room by tashas and Collective Africa, creating a sequence of dining, design and retail rather than a single conventional venue. The inspiration is the romance of tented African safari camps: dark, earthy materials, plush seating, crafted details and an indoor-outdoor feel that becomes particularly effective on the terrace.

The Galleria currently describes African Lounge as the collection’s space for “refined comfort”, with a menu built around mocktails, savoury nibbles, pastries, sweets and sharing plates.

Small plates with more ambition than the word “lounge” suggests

The food has always been more serious than a few snacks beside drinks. A detailed Abu Dhabi review highlighted grilled bao with spiced butter, miso-grilled aubergine, tomato salad, calamari sosaties, butternut curry and prawn arancini — dishes that moved through Asian, African and contemporary international references without losing the venue’s own identity.

The Galleria’s current dining menu also singles out a signature Wagyu dish with caramelised onion butter, tomato jam, garlic chips and curry leaf. For a lighter visit, there is an African-inspired High Tea and the prestige of Mariage Frères tea, while the alcohol-free drinks programme suits the lounge’s slower afternoon rhythm.

Design is not an afterthought.

Many Abu Dhabi restaurants have attractive interiors; African Lounge builds the entire experience around atmosphere. The safari-camp references could easily have become decorative theatre, but the best details are quieter: texture, warm low light, wildlife-inspired objects and the contrast between the moody interior and Al Maryah’s modern skyline outside.

The final reason to go is that the room has enough personality to change pace across the day. It can be an afternoon tea stop, a light sharing-plate lunc,h or an evening lounge, while the terrace creates a very different mood from the enclosed luxury retail world around it. In that sense, African Lounge is less about one meal format than about a distinctive place to spend time.
