Ten Buildings Around a Canal: The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal

The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque across the creek

The Grand Canal in the name is literal. The resort was laid out around a waterway cut through the site, with ten separate buildings arranged along it and a Venetian reference carried through the property as far as the Venezia Ballroom on the events floor. It stands on Al Rawdah in the Al Maqta area, on the Khor Al Maqta creek, directly across the water from the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

That orientation was settled before anything was built. Five hundred and thirty rooms and suites, a private beach, a marina and two outdoor pools were arranged so that the mosque falls into the view from the places where guests spend their evenings, and the canal was The cut canal running between the resort's ten buildings

The creek, and what is across it

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is ten minutes away by road and a good deal less than that across the water. It is lit after dark, it fills the outlook from this bank of the creek, and the resort’s canal side and terrace tables face it directly.

That is the sightline the whole property is built on, and it is why dinner outdoors here is booked out weeks ahead in the cooler months while the same tables sit half empty in August.

Beyond the creek, the exhibition centre, Khalifa Park and the Mangrove Lagoon National Park are all close, Yas Marina Circuit is a straightforward drive, and Zayed International Airport is 24.6 kilometres away, which is under twenty minutes on a clear road. The resort holds environmental certification, still uncommon in the emirate at this scale.

A deluxe room of forty two square metres with a balcony and water view

Five hundred and thirty keys, and the Club Lounge

Deluxe rooms run to forty two square metres with balconies, Egyptian cotton linen, hypoallergenic bedding and a pillow menu. Executive suites add separate sitting areas.

Above them the resort runs garden suites, garden houses and villas of up to two bedrooms with their own garden areas and water views, and villa categories with plunge pools, including the Rabdan pool villas. It is a deep list, and it is the reason the property can hold a couple, a family of five and a visiting delegation on the same night without any of them meeting.

Club Level accommodation carries access to the Club Lounge on the top floor, with panoramic views and food presentations through the day. In a resort of 530 keys, that lounge is the thing that makes the place feel small again, and it is worth the difference in rate for a stay of three nights or more.

The rooms facing the creek and the mosque are the ones to insist on at the point of booking rather than at the desk.

Mijana, the Michelin Guide selected restaurant at the resort

Eight rooms to eat and drink in

Eight venues operate across the resort, which is a programme rather than a provision.

Mijana is the fine dining room, working across Middle Eastern flavours, and it is selected by the Michelin Guide. The Forge is the steakhouse, dealing in premium cuts with a wine list to match. Li Jiang handles Asian cooking in a modern register. Giornotte covers Mediterranean all day dining and runs the Saturday brunch. Dolce works a wellness menu of keto and vegan dishes and poke bowls, and The Pool Bar by Dolce takes the same idea out to the water. Sorso Bar and the Alba Lobby Lounge complete the list, Alba handling breakfast and afternoon tea.

> Book a canal facing table and time it for sunset. The mosque lights across the water while you are still on the first course, and no photograph anybody takes of it does the thing justice.

The larger of the two outdoor pools, with complimentary cabanas

Two pools, a beach and a marina

Two outdoor pools serve the resort, with complimentary cabanas and umbrellas, and the larger of them is among the biggest hotel pools in the capital. A children’s pool sits alongside, and the pools run from seven in the morning until nine at night.

The private beach carries umbrellas and full service, and the marina adds water access, which very few hotels on this creek can offer. The spa runs private treatment rooms with a wellness area, sauna, Turkish steam bath and jacuzzi, and the health club operates around the clock.

Childcare at no charge

The children’s club is complimentary and the supervised childcare within it is provided at no charge, alongside a children’s pool and a playground.

Free supervised childcare is an unusual inclusion at this level anywhere in the world, and it changes what a stay here can be. Parents who expect to pay by the hour for an afternoon to themselves will find they do not, and the resort has enough ground, water and restaurants for two adults to disappear into for the length of a session.

Two ballrooms and more than twenty meeting rooms

The events operation runs to two grand ballrooms and more than twenty flexible meeting rooms, the Venezia Ballroom the most recent addition, amounting to more than twenty three thousand square feet of meeting and event space.

A business centre operates around the clock, limousine service is available and express check in is offered, all of which points at the conference and wedding trade that fills a resort of this size between leisure seasons.

Along the creek

The Khor Al Maqta group separates cleanly. Shangri-La Qaryat Al Beri runs four pools, a private beach and an abra ride to a traditional souq. Fairmont Bab Al Bahr looks at the mosque across its own sand at rates that undercut its neighbours. ERTH is the conversion, with mature grounds and no beach at all.

The Ritz-Carlton is the largest of the four at 530 rooms, and the one that adds a canal and a marina to the beach. It is also the one that solves the hardest problem on this stretch of water, which is holding a couple, a family and a conference on the same site without any of the three noticing the others.

Insist on a room facing the creek. Book Mijana or a canal side table for the evening the light is best, and use the children’s club without a second thought about the bill.
