UAE-backed campaign completes holistic village transformation in Ghana

The 1 Billion Acts of Kindness campaign, launched through the 1 Billion Followers Summit and supported by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives and the Varkey Foundation, has completed a comprehensive development framework for a village in Ghana’s Eastern Region.

The programme was built around five core pillars — clean water, education, food, health and economic opportunity — and combined the logistical support of charitable partners with the reach of international content creators. The initiative was advanced during the summit’s fourth edition in January 2026 and executed on the ground with a field team led by Jimmy Donaldson (aka MrBeast) and 20 international creators selected by the summit.

Alia Al Hammadi, Vice Chairperson of the UAE Government Media Office and CEO of the 1 Billion Followers Summit, described the work as an example of how digital media and content creation can be marshalled to address humanitarian needs and produce sustainable local change.

Sunny Varkey, Founder of the Varkey Foundation, highlighted the emphasis on education, noting the campaign combined schooling, nutrition and health measures to remove barriers to learning.

The village, home to 1,062 residents and dependent on cocoa farming, faced entrenched poverty: average household incomes were reported at between $100 and $120, basic sanitation and clean water were lacking, and child labour rates rose to almost 40 per cent. Prior to the project, residents sometimes travelled as long as an hour by motorbike to reach basic medical care.

Within a year the campaign implemented tangible infrastructure and services: classrooms from kindergarten through junior high were constructed or renovated, teacher housing was provided to support staff retention, and a school meals programme was introduced to reduce hunger-related absenteeism. Water and sanitation works included clean water systems, latrines and handwashing stations. A new health clinic now offers local access to primary care, enabling early detection and treatment of conditions such as malaria and respiratory infections and reducing the need for long, costly journeys to distant facilities.

Donaldson and his collaborators have used their platforms — MrBeast’s network is reported to record some 62 billion annual views and reach over 1.1 billion followers — to document the project and promote the model. The campaign organisers say the story will be shared through behind-the-scenes productions and distribution across a collective network of creators, which they describe as extending to 3,000 creators in 180 countries.

Organisers frame the Ghana project as a replicable example of how purpose-driven content, philanthropic partners and targeted investment can deliver rapid improvements in living standards and services for small, resource-constrained communities.
