UAE Parliament Advances Multilateral Engagement at UN General Assembly

The Federal National Council's Parliamentary Division advocates for enhanced parliamentary participation in United Nations processes during the 81st session of the General Assembly in New York.

The United Arab Emirates’ Parliamentary Division of the Federal National Council has reinforced its commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation on the global stage, participating in the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s parliamentary meeting held during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Led by Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Division, the UAE delegation engaged with international parliamentary leadership to advance discussions on enhanced participation in United Nations decision-making processes. Dr. Tulia Ackson, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, highlighted how the Pact for the Future—adopted in September 2024—underscores the necessity of multilateral cooperation and deepened parliamentary involvement in UN processes and the implementation of international agreements.

Dr. Al Nuaimi articulated a principled position on parliamentary representation, emphasising that the inclusion of parliamentarians within official national delegations would enable legislators to contribute meaningfully to discussions on international matters and multilateral decision-making. He advocated for the Inter-Parliamentary Union to take concrete measures encouraging governments to integrate parliamentarians more substantially into their UN delegations, positioning this as a matter to be raised systematically across the IPU’s membership.

Recognising that responsibility for advancing parliamentary participation extends beyond the United Nations itself, Dr. Al Nuaimi stressed the necessity for national parliaments and the IPU to undertake coordinated action. He observed that since the adoption of the United Nations Charter in 1945, the world has undergone profound political, economic and demographic shifts, necessitating an evolved international system capable of addressing contemporary challenges and advancing shared values.

The UAE’s engagement reflects its broader commitment to supporting effective multilateralism and ensuring that parliamentary voices remain central to the development and implementation of solutions addressing global development priorities, particularly through the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals.
