Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative Partners with Global Leaders to Transform Water Innovation into Real-World Solutions
A landmark collaboration announced at the United Nations General Assembly brings together leading organisations to help promising water technologies progress from competition success toward commercial deployment and global scale.
The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative has joined forces with Dalio Philanthropies, Imagine H2O and XPRIZE Foundation to establish a strategic partnership designed to accelerate the journey of innovative water technologies from laboratory breakthrough to market implementation. The collaboration, unveiled during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, addresses a critical gap in the global water innovation ecosystem.
While international competitions have proven effective at identifying promising solutions and attracting innovative talent, the transition from competition success to commercial viability presents significant challenges. This partnership bridges that divide, providing innovators with the commercial expertise, technical guidance and ecosystem connections necessary to achieve meaningful real-world impact at scale.
Imagine H2O will lead accelerator and commercialisation efforts for selected innovators, offering comprehensive support encompassing market development, pilot design and testing assistance, deployment guidance, stakeholder engagement, and commercial readiness strengthening. The programme will initially concentrate on innovators participating in the XPRIZE Water Scarcity and Al Miyah Challenge competitions, extending support beyond the competitions themselves.
Ayesha Al Ateeqi, Chief Executive of The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, emphasised the significance of the initiative: “Competitions bring fresh perspectives and creativity to complex challenges, creating conditions for breakthrough innovation. However, identifying a promising solution represents only one part of the journey. Innovators require commercial capabilities, partnerships, customers and deployment pathways to translate technological progress into lasting real-world impact.”
Ray Dalio, Co-Founder of Dalio Philanthropies, underscored the critical importance of the collaboration, noting that access to clean water remains fundamental to human survival. Scott Bryan, President of Imagine H2O, highlighted the organisation’s fifteen-year experience connecting entrepreneurs with water utilities and industrial users. Anousheh Ansari, Chief Executive of XPRIZE Foundation, recognised partnerships as essential for bridging the gap between innovation and implementation.
Beyond direct accelerator support, the organisations will pursue ecosystem activation opportunities, knowledge sharing initiatives, case studies and additional jointly agreed programmes intended to strengthen pathways from innovation to commercial application. The collaboration reflects the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative’s broader mission to bridge the gap between promising technologies and large-scale implementation through enhanced evidence, strategic partnerships and practical deployment pathways.
The announcement followed a high-level roundtable convened by The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative on the sidelines of UNGA81, bringing together leaders from philanthropy, innovation competitions, accelerators, investment and industry to examine how prizes and challenges can catalyse lasting change.
