Abu Dhabi has secured its place in international sumo history following the staging of the UAE’s first international professional sumo competition at Space42 Arena on Saturday, 26th September. Jaagii of Mongolia emerged victorious at the All-Star Sumo Elite Competition, bringing his distinguished career credentials to the prestigious occasion.
The accomplished competitor, a two-time World Sumo Championship silver medalist with an extensive background in international tournaments, navigated a demanding programme to claim championship honours. The event represented a landmark moment for the sport, introducing the refined athletic traditions and ceremonial pageantry of professional sumo to the Emirati stage for the first time.
Nine elite wrestlers participated across 36 rigorously contested bouts, each match staged on a competition platform specially prepared to meet international standards. The assembled roster demonstrated the global reach of the sport, with competitors drawn from Japan, Mongolia and Egypt—nations whose representatives brought world championship credentials, Emperor’s Cup accolades and decades of professional experience to the arena.
The competition balanced the demanding technical and physical elements of sumo wrestling with the ceremonial traditions that have defined the sport for centuries. Each bout reflected both the athletic rigour required at championship level and the cultural significance embedded within sumo’s ancient protocols.
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi hosted the occasion, underlining the emirate’s commitment to fostering international sporting excellence and cultural exchange.
