Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge Returns to Al Ain for Historic 35th Edition
Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the world-renowned rally will start and finish in Al Ain Region for the first time, whilst establishing its main operational base in Madinat Zayed as the championship-concluding event of the 2026 World Rally-Raid season.
The 35th Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge will take place from 22 to 27 November 2026, marking a significant evolution in the event’s distinguished history. Organised by the Emirates Motorsports Organization in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, this milestone edition will see the rally start and finish in Al Ain Region for the first time, whilst extending westward to connect with Al Dhafra, the region most closely associated with the event since its inception.
Madinat Zayed will serve as the principal operational hub, hosting the main rally bivouac—the temporary international city that forms the beating heart of any major rally raid championship. This placement brings the working world of elite international motorsport directly into the urban setting, creating unprecedented opportunities for residents and visitors to experience the atmosphere surrounding the championship, with a programme of bivouac activations and spectator experiences to be announced in the coming weeks.
A Championship-Defining Moment
The 2026 edition carries particular sporting significance as the concluding round of the World Rally-Raid Championship, positioning Abu Dhabi at the centre of the season’s closing celebrations. This designation underscores the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge’s standing amongst the five most important rally events globally, attracting the world’s leading FIA and FIM rally raid competitors.

Geographic Expansion and Route Innovation
The 2026 itinerary represents a substantial reworking of the competitive route, with the field traversing different areas and terrain across the week. The rally opens in Al Ain on Sunday 22 November with a Prologue and ceremonial start, before turning westward into Al Dhafra Region’s desert terrain. The final competitive stage on Friday 27 November will return the competitors eastward to Al Ain Region, completing a journey across the emirate’s distinctive landscapes and natural diversity.
This expansion builds upon the event’s first visit to Al Ain Region in 2025, enabled through continued support from the Ruler’s Representative Court in Al Dhafra Region and cooperation amongst authorities across Abu Dhabi. The concept development maintains the deep connection with Al Dhafra that has historically defined the Desert Challenge whilst showcasing the geographical diversity of the emirate.
Organisational Partnership and Support
His Excellency Aref Hamad Al Awani, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, noted the event’s significance: “The 35th edition carries particular significance as the concluding round of the World Rally-Raid Championship. With a route connecting Al Ain and Al Dhafra, it will present competitors with a variety of challenges across some of Abu Dhabi’s distinctive locations and natural terrain.”
His Excellency Nasser Mohammed Al Mansoori, Undersecretary of the Ruler’s Representative Court in Al Dhafra Region, emphasised the rally’s role in international promotion: “The Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge has been closely associated with Al Dhafra for decades, with the region becoming an integral part of the event’s identity and history.”

Since its creation over three decades ago, the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge has evolved alongside international rally raid whilst maintaining its connection to Al Dhafra’s landscapes and communities. The 35th edition continues this trajectory, linking the event’s established desert heritage with an expanding journey across Abu Dhabi and bringing the 2026 world championship season to its conclusion in the emirate.
