UAE and Azerbaijan unite through museums to preserve heritage and strengthen cultural bonds
A landmark cultural event in Baku has showcased how museums serve as vital institutions for heritage preservation and cross-cultural dialogue, reinforcing the deepening partnership between the UAE and Azerbaijan across the cultural and tourism sectors.
The Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Azerbaijan has hosted a significant cultural event exploring the pivotal role of museums in preserving national heritage and fostering international exchange. Organised in coordination with Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Culture and Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism, the gathering brought together diplomatic representatives, cultural specialists, and senior officials from both nations under the theme Museums of the UAE and Azerbaijan… A Story Told Between a Rich Past and a Promising Future.
Strengthening bilateral cooperation through culture
His Excellency Mohammed Murad Al Blooshi, Ambassador of the UAE to Azerbaijan, delivered remarks emphasising the depth of bilateral relations between the two countries and their expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. He articulated the essential function of museums as institutions that construct bridges of knowledge whilst facilitating cultural understanding between peoples. The Ambassador underscored the importance of sustained development in joint initiatives within the cultural and tourism spheres, advocating for continued exchange of expertise in heritage preservation and the promotion of cultural assets.
Museums as platforms for heritage and innovation
Fatima Al Hammadi, Curator of the Zayed National Museum and member of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi Youth Council, addressed the dual significance of museums as institutions that simultaneously honour heritage preservation and embrace openness to future possibilities. She highlighted how museums function as catalysts for tourism development, elevating visitor experiences whilst showcasing the historical and civilisational achievements of nations. Her remarks emphasised the institution’s capacity to serve as cultural platforms that engage communities and promote understanding across generations.
Shirin Malikova, Director of the National Museum of Art of Azerbaijan, spoke to the importance of museums in safeguarding Azerbaijan’s artistic and cultural inheritance. She underscored the value of institutional exchange between specialised museum organisations in both countries, positioning such collaboration as essential for advancing professional expertise and knowledge-sharing across borders.
Cultural exchange and artistic celebration
Her Excellency Saadat Yusifova, Deputy Minister of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, emphasised the transformative potential of cultural cooperation and joint initiatives in advancing dialogue and facilitating the exchange of knowledge between nations. She acknowledged the strengthening bonds of partnership between the two countries.
The event featured a compelling video presentation that showcased Abu Dhabi’s heritage institutions and contemporary art establishments, illustrating how museums extend their influence beyond physical spaces through preservation, research, educational programming, community engagement and cultural exchange. The presentation portrayed a nation drawing inspiration from its historical foundations whilst progressing confidently toward future possibilities.
Musical performances complemented the proceedings, with Emirati pianist Ahmed Al Hashemi presenting a selection of compositions, whilst an Azerbaijani musical ensemble performed traditional and national pieces reflecting the country’s rich artistic heritage.
