GWU and UNODC forge strategic partnership to advance women’s empowerment
The General Women's Union and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime have signed a landmark cooperation agreement to strengthen joint efforts in promoting women's empowerment and building safer communities across the region.
The General Women’s Union (GWU) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) have formalised a significant cooperation agreement designed to deepen international collaboration and advance sustainable development partnerships. The signing ceremony took place in Abu Dhabi on 30th September, 2026, witnessed by Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad Al Nahyan, Chairman of the National Anti-Narcotics Authority.
Noura Khalifa Al Suwaidi, Secretary-General of the General Women’s Union, signed the agreement on behalf of the UAE institution, whilst Monica Juma, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, represented the international body. The accord represents a significant moment in strengthening institutional frameworks between the Emirates and the United Nations.
Ms Al Suwaidi underscored that the agreement exemplifies the UAE’s unwavering commitment to fostering effective partnerships with the United Nations and creating innovative mechanisms that directly benefit communities. She emphasised that this understanding establishes essential foundations for consolidating expertise and exchanging technical and field-based knowledge, thereby contributing substantively to enhanced community safety and expanded prevention and protection initiatives.
The cooperation framework establishes institutional mechanisms for unifying joint endeavours and shared strategic visions, whilst advancing developmental and humanitarian initiatives. The agreement particularly reinforces the position of Emirati women as an inspirational global exemplar of influence and leadership. It furthermore strengthens mechanisms for continuous, effective consultation and coordination between both parties, supporting women’s empowerment and the development of safer, more informed communities.
Both organisations remain committed to expanding humanitarian and developmental horizons, establishing an integrated institutional model that fortifies the foundations of sustainable quality of life. The partnership supports endeavours to empower women and enhance their essential role in shaping futures and participating in decision-making processes at regional and international levels, reflecting shared dedication to advancing women’s rights and community resilience.
