Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman launches elderly services initiative in Sharjah

The Chairman of the Ruler's Office inaugurates the 15th Elderly Services Forum, unveiling the 'Anwar' mentorship programme and 'Wafa' Card to enhance support for senior citizens
Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Ruler’s Office, presided over the opening of the 15th edition of the Elderly Services Forum in Sharjah, marking a significant occasion for advancing care and engagement with the emirate’s senior population. The event, held at Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre, brought together officials, specialists and international experts dedicated to enhancing elderly services.
Organised by the Sharjah Social Services Department under the theme ‘A Decent Life and Sustainable Giving’, the Forum reflected the United Arab Emirates’ commitment to honouring its elder citizens whilst harnessing their considerable expertise for community benefit.
During the opening ceremony, Suleiman Khamis Al Naqbi, Director of the Sharjah Social Services Department, emphasised the dual importance of elderly care and the strategic value of senior citizens as a human resource. He unveiled the ‘Anwar’ initiative, a pioneering programme that positions experienced elder citizens within academic institutions to mentor university students and contribute to scholarly research. Through specialised dialogue sessions and academic mentorship, the initiative creates meaningful intergenerational connections whilst preserving and transmitting valuable knowledge to younger generations.
Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman launched the ‘Wafa’ Card, a comprehensive benefits scheme designed to streamline senior citizens’ access to essential services and support. The Chairman also recognised excellence across multiple domains, honouring winners of the fifth edition of the Green Heart Award for Senior Citizens and commending institutions accredited by the Age-Friendly City Office.
The Forum’s three principal sessions address critical dimensions of elderly care. The first examines local models empowering senior citizens within their communities. The second explores international best practices in elderly services applicable to Sharjah’s context. The third considers integrated approaches bridging healthcare, family support and social care systems.
This gathering represents the broader vision of building genuinely age-friendly communities where senior citizens maintain active, dignified participation in society. By recognising elders as both cherished community members and valued knowledge-holders, Sharjah continues advancing comprehensive, compassionate and sustainable elderly services.
