Zayed Authority celebrates milestone as five members earn prestigious barista certification
Members from Al Ain's Innovation Center have successfully completed specialised training with Refill Coffee Roastery, bringing the total number of internationally certified baristas within the Authority to 14.
The Zayed Authority for People of Determination has marked a significant achievement in professional empowerment, with five members from its Al Ain operations earning the internationally recognised barista certification from the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). This accomplishment brings the total number of Authority members holding this accreditation to 14.
The five certified professionals completed an intensive specialised training programme beginning in February 2026 through the “Bee Coffee” initiative, delivered in collaboration with Refill Coffee Roastery, a leading specialty coffee establishment. The participants, drawn from the Innovation Center – Al Ain and representing individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism, successfully navigated both theoretical and practical components of the rigorous certification process.
The comprehensive curriculum encompassed essential and advanced coffee preparation techniques, including espresso machine operation, precision grinding and dosing, milk steaming, and preparation of speciality beverages. Instruction extended beyond technical skills to encompass hygiene standards, occupational safety protocols, customer service excellence, and professional public interaction. Crucially, the programme included practical immersion within an active café environment, enabling participants to apply their learning in authentic professional conditions whilst building confidence and collaborative capacity.
These five newly certified members join nine colleagues previously certified in Abu Dhabi, forming a cohort of 14 qualified specialists across the Authority. The development represents the expansion of “Bee Café”, the Emirates’ pioneering café entirely operated by People of Determination. This venture has established itself as a distinctive model of economic empowerment, transforming individual passion for coffee into professionally recognised expertise and sustainable career pathways within the hospitality sector.
The Authority’s integrated approach combines hands-on training with development of communication, customer service, teamwork, and independence competencies. By providing authentic working environments and structured professional progression, the initiative strengthens labour market participation for People of Determination and facilitates meaningful transition from training to genuine employment opportunities.
