Abu Dhabi Chamber Champions Private Sector’s Role in Sustainable Urban Investment

Senior business leaders highlight the emirate's competitive advantages and long-term vision as drivers for sustainable city development and economic growth
The Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry has underscored the vital contribution of the private sector in advancing sustainable development whilst expanding investment prospects in future cities. Speaking at LIVEX 2026 – Liveability and Investment Exhibition, Masaood Al Masaood, Treasurer of the Chamber’s Board and Vice Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Family Business Council, addressed an international forum of leaders and specialists exploring investment trajectories in sustainable urban development.
Mr Al Masaood articulated how Abu Dhabi’s long-term developmental vision, robust business climate and effective public-private collaborations create a compelling foundation for opportunities that seamlessly integrate economic expansion, environmental stewardship and enhanced quality of life. The emirate’s demonstrated capacity to deliver significant projects through private sector partnerships, he noted, positions it exceptionally well for scaling sustainable investment ventures.
“Sustainability today represents a growing economic and investment opportunity,” Mr Al Masaood observed, “and Abu Dhabi has the fundamentals to capitalise on it – from a clear long-term vision and a stable business environment to deep experience in building enduring partnerships with the private sector.”
The discussion highlighted diverse opportunities within sustainable urban development, encompassing building efficiency improvements, innovative cooling technologies, water recycling systems, waste management solutions and sustainable transportation networks. Developing cohesive investment frameworks that integrate related projects at scale, Mr Al Masaood suggested, can substantially enhance their appeal to investors and democratise participation across a broader investment community.
Recognising family businesses as particularly well-positioned for sustainability-related investments, Mr Al Masaood emphasised their distinctive strengths in long-term strategic thinking and capital deployment. “One of the defining strengths of family businesses is their ability to think and invest across generations,” he noted. “That long-term perspective is naturally aligned with investments in cities, infrastructure and sustainability, where value is built over years and decades.”
The Abu Dhabi Chamber continues strengthening private sector readiness through its Sustainability Label framework, a tiered certification system progressing from Bronze to Diamond status. This initiative enables organisations to assess progress, enhance performance and communicate achievements transparently, strengthening investor confidence and institutional engagement.
Mr Al Masaood concluded that Abu Dhabi exemplifies how economic growth and environmental sustainability reinforce one another, with investments in efficient, liveable cities ultimately strengthening broader economic competitiveness and creating expanding opportunities for the private sector to develop innovative solutions and generate enduring value.
