Abu Dhabi Charts Ambitious Course Towards Sustainable Energy Future

The Emirate reaffirms its commitment to developing a resilient energy system capable of meeting evolving global demands whilst advancing its vision for clean energy production.
Abu Dhabi continues to advance its comprehensive vision for a sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure, positioning itself at the forefront of the global energy transition. The Emirate’s multifaceted approach encompasses the development of a diversified energy mix, the strengthening of critical infrastructure and system flexibility, and the strategic deployment of cutting-edge technologies to optimise resource management.
Marking the occasion of World Energy Day, observed on 22nd October, Ahmed Mohammed Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi, emphasised the transformative nature of the contemporary energy landscape. Industrial expansion, widespread electrification, the proliferation of artificial intelligence and increasingly sophisticated digital economies are fundamentally reshaping patterns of energy demand, whilst the accelerating transition towards cleaner sources is revolutionising how energy is produced, stored and distributed.
The Emirate’s ambitious objective of sourcing 60 per cent of its electricity production from clean energy by 2035 represents the scale and direction of this comprehensive transformation. This strategic ambition is underpinned by substantial investment in human capital development and the cultivation of national capabilities, ensuring that the Emirate possesses the expertise and technological prowess to lead and manage an increasingly complex energy sector.
Al Rumaithi underscored the paramount importance of strengthening partnerships to consolidate expertise, technology and knowledge whilst building the capabilities requisite for future success. He emphasised that this responsibility extends beyond immediate objectives, encompassing a commitment to utilising resources in a manner that preserves their enduring value and enhances opportunities available to subsequent generations.
Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Obaidli, Director General of Regulatory Affairs at the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, highlighted the crucial nexus between energy provision and economic and societal development. Reliable and affordable energy constitutes the foundation upon which businesses invest, industries expand, communities flourish and innovative technologies become integrated into daily life.
Al Obaidli outlined the Department’s regulatory framework, which emphasises the delivery of reliable services, efficient resource utilisation, appropriate costs and a regulatory environment that incentivises performance and continuous enhancement. With more than AED 300 billion in planned investment across Abu Dhabi’s water and power infrastructure through 2035, clear and predictable regulatory frameworks are essential to affording investors and operators the confidence to commit capital, deploy advanced technology and undertake long-term planning.
The regulatory approach prioritises the encouragement of efficiency and innovation whilst safeguarding consumer interests and maintaining the dependability and affordability of essential services. By furnishing transparent and consistent frameworks, Abu Dhabi endeavours to facilitate innovation and investment whilst ensuring that the broader benefits of the energy transition are reflected in the superior quality, efficiency and resilience of services delivered to society.
