Abu Dhabi convenes global diplomatic community as water conference takes shape

Abu Dhabi convenes global diplomatic community as water conference takes shape

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has held a second major briefing with ambassadors and international organisations, deepening preparations for December's landmark UN Water Conference, which will bring together world leaders to accelerate solutions to the global water crisis.

The Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy hosted a gathering of 180 diplomatic representatives this week, a significant expansion from the 150 who attended the first briefing in May. The occasion marked a crucial moment in the UAE’s orchestration of one of the year’s most consequential global forums: the 2026 United Nations Water Conference, which the country will co-host with the Republic of Senegal from 8–10 December at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, addressed the assembly with an urgent call for action. “Water security is fundamental to national security, economic prosperity, and sustainable development,” he stated, emphasising that the conference must transcend conventional dialogue to deliver measurable progress. “We cannot afford to approach this challenge with business as usual. The 2026 UN Water Conference must be a turning point.”

The gathering reflected the scale of what lies ahead. This will be the third UN Water Conference in fifty years, and the first dedicated entirely to accelerating Sustainable Development Goal 6, which seeks to ensure universal access to safe water and sanitation. The briefing provided Member States with comprehensive detail on the conference structure, participation options, and the substantive programme that awaits them in December.

The three days of formal proceedings will unfold around interconnected themes. Tuesday, 8 December, opens with ‘Water for Shared Prosperity’, exploring how water cooperation advances human development and international partnership. Wednesday’s ‘Investments for Lives & Livelihood’ addresses the financing, innovation and partnerships essential to translating ambition into practical benefit. The final day’s ‘Resilient Future Together’ emphasises collective action in building water security across generations.

Six Interactive Dialogues will structure the formal Blue Zone programme, adopted by consensus at the General Assembly. These cover cooperation, prosperity, investment (notably the first dialogue devoted entirely to financing in UN Water Conference history), people, planet, and multilateral processes. The dialogues will encompass water and sanitation, economic development, climate resilience, international cooperation and the technological innovation required to accelerate progress.

Beyond the formal multilateral spaces, the UAE-hosted Oasis will create an expansive ecosystem where diplomatic decision-makers, business leaders, investors, civil society and youth converge. Country pavilions and exhibition spaces will enable nations and organisations to present their approaches and solutions, whilst the programme will showcase technologies and foster collaboration on practical responses to water challenges. As the UAE has advanced its own integrated water management model across international forums, this conference promises to amplify such expertise on a global stage.

The briefing represents the culmination of months of sustained diplomatic engagement. The UAE has extended personal invitations to world leaders, whilst initiatives to build awareness and engagement continue at home. The conference programme aims to move beyond rhetoric toward concrete outcomes: investments, political commitments, technical solutions and partnerships that measurably improve lives and expand access to water and sanitation.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi’s hosting of this conference cements the emirate’s position as a centre for addressing humanity’s most pressing challenges. The city will welcome world leaders, technical experts, investors and innovators to engage in the most comprehensive global dialogue on water in five decades. For Abu Dhabi, a region where water security has long been central to development and prosperity, this conference affirms the emirate’s experience and vision as valuable to the world.

The event will generate substantial engagement across the city, from ADNEC’s formal spaces to the wider Oasis programme, drawing international attention and fostering partnerships that extend far beyond December. Through the diplomatic momentum being built now, the UAE is positioning itself not merely as host, but as a convener capable of translating global ambition into practical solutions that benefit communities across the world.
