Abu Dhabi Convenes Global Healthcare Leaders to Define Standards of Medical Excellence
His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan inaugurated the Healthcare Leaders Summit – Abu Dhabi 2026, bringing together more than 3,000 healthcare professionals, policymakers and experts to explore transformative approaches to global healthcare delivery and innovation.
The Healthcare Leaders Summit – Abu Dhabi 2026 opened on 22–23 September at Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, convening an unprecedented gathering of medical leaders, scientists, executives and policymakers from across the UAE, the region and the world. Held under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, and organised in partnership with Forbes Middle East and PureHealth, the summit assembled more than 100 distinguished speakers and approximately 3,000 participants to examine the critical transformations reshaping healthcare’s future.
Defining Excellence in a Rapidly Evolving Field
In his opening address, His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan reflected on the summit’s central theme—Defining Global Standards in Healthcare Excellence—emphasising that the question of what excellence should mean has become increasingly complex as science, medicine, technology and patient expectations transform at accelerating pace. He highlighted that under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE has emerged as a centre of healthcare excellence distinguished by exceptional facilities, accomplished professionals and productive global partnerships. Yet the nation’s ambition extends beyond adopting established standards; rather, the UAE seeks to help establish the benchmarks by which excellence itself will be defined, measured and judged.
Technology and the Human Element
While acknowledging the extraordinary possibilities that technological advancement has unlocked for diagnosis, treatment, prevention and research, His Excellency emphasised that no matter how powerful technology becomes, the practice of medicine will always require a physician to identify problems, prescribe treatment and interact directly and humanely with patients. This balance between innovation and the irreducible human dimension of healthcare emerged as a recurrent theme throughout his address. He stressed the critical importance of ensuring that healthcare systems remain humane even as they become increasingly intelligent and advanced—a principle that cannot simply be encoded into protocol and risks being lost without deliberate protection.
Collaboration and Regional Cooperation
His Excellency called for close partnerships between decision-makers, pharmaceutical companies, technology developers, physicians, biomedical engineers, hospitals and educational institutions, stressing that no single institution can shape healthcare’s future alone. He noted that whilst healthcare management may prove less dramatic than scientific discovery, it remains equally vital—particularly as populations grow, life expectancy extends and treatments become simultaneously more effective and more expensive. Excellent management emerges as the decisive factor in controlling costs, improving decision-making, raising efficiency and ensuring that resources reach those in greatest need.
Emphasising healthcare’s regional dimension, His Excellency stressed that disease respects no national boundary and neither should knowledge. He reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and coordination in healthcare, supporting the exchange of expertise and knowledge to develop more effective solutions to shared health challenges.
Comprehensive Programme and Distinguished Participants
The summit’s two-day programme explored diverse dimensions of contemporary healthcare, including policy and leadership, regulatory frameworks, pharmaceutical innovation, strategic partnerships and international collaboration. Sessions examined longevity and precision health, the future of fertility and advanced reproductive medicine—fields in which Abu Dhabi has emerged as a global hub—and the convergence of genomics, molecular biomarkers and advanced diagnostics to enable predictive intelligence and earlier intervention.
Day one welcomed prominent figures including His Excellency Dr Amin Hussain Al Ameeri, Assistant Undersecretary of the Health Regulation Sector at the Ministry of Health and Prevention; His Excellency Dr Rashed Alsuwaidi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre; Shaista Asif, Group CEO of PureHealth; and leading healthcare executives including the chief executives of major institutions including Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, APEX Health and Apollo Hospitals.
Shaista Asif, Group CEO of PureHealth, observed that as health becomes increasingly interconnected and borderless, artificial intelligence and technology are opening new possibilities for understanding, preventing and delivering care. She emphasised that technology offers the opportunity to make healthcare more personal, proactive and connected to individual needs, with innovation translating into improved experiences and outcomes.
Doctors Circle and Accredited Clinical Education
Running alongside the main programme, Doctors Circle provided a dedicated platform for clinical discussion through CME-accredited sessions spanning robotic-assisted surgery, artificial intelligence and early disease detection, liver disease, reproductive medicine, longevity and women’s health, mental health, paediatric surgery and rare diseases.
The summit’s second day featured keynote addresses on rethinking healthcare at scale through intelligent, integrated and resilient systems, alongside sessions examining intelligent clinical ecosystems, connected health platforms and wearable devices, cellular and gene therapies, and the future of care delivery through virtual platforms and hybrid models. The programme concluded with discussions on capital with purpose and its role in driving sustainable growth and healthcare capabilities.
