Abu Dhabi Establishes Comprehensive Standards for Industrial Building Facades

The Urban Planning and Permits Centre has unveiled guidelines to elevate the aesthetic and functional standards of industrial architecture across the Emirate, beginning with implementation in Mussafah.
The Urban Planning and Permits Centre at the Department of Municipalities and Transport has introduced a comprehensive framework to govern the architectural presentation of industrial buildings throughout Abu Dhabi. The Guidelines for Regulating Industrial Building Facades represent a thoughtfully calibrated approach to enhancing the visual landscape of industrial zones whilst honouring the operational requirements essential to the sector’s vitality.
These meticulously crafted standards establish unified specifications for building facades that interface with streets and public spaces, encompassing architectural appearance, maintenance protocols, signage, entrance design, service areas and storage configurations. The framework thoughtfully integrates safety and fire prevention requirements alongside sustainability considerations, encouraging the adoption of materials suited to the local climate and the particular demands of industrial operations.
Eng. Abdulla Mohamed Alblooshi, Director General of the Urban Planning and Permits Centre, articulated the initiative’s significance: “Industrial areas play an important role in supporting Abu Dhabi’s economy and meeting the needs of different business sectors. Regulating industrial building facades forms part of ongoing efforts to improve the urban environment in these areas, enhance facility safety and take account of the nature of economic activities and their operational requirements.”
The guidelines acknowledge the considerable diversity inherent within industrial properties through a graduated improvement framework encompassing three distinct levels. Level One addresses essential maintenance, encompassing general cleaning, repainting and minor repairs. Level Two concentrates upon the systematic organisation of facade elements, signage, entrances, fencing systems, service areas and open storage spaces. Level Three contemplates more comprehensive facade redevelopment in priority locations or circumstances demanding broader transformation, permitting bespoke determinations according to individual building conditions.
Implementation, initiated under Administrative Resolution No. (48) of 2026, commences within Mussafah, extending to industrial buildings and facilities fronting streets and public spaces, encompassing existing structures, new construction and properties under development. The scope encompasses an extensive range of facilities, including workshops, warehouses, showrooms, logistics centres, spare-parts retailers, vehicle repair establishments and mixed-use industrial complexes.
The compliance methodology reflects a graduated approach, affording property owners and investors reasonable opportunity to implement required enhancements. This process encompasses awareness initiatives, advisory notices, formal notifications and warnings, each accompanied by appropriate periods for corrective action prior to regulatory inspections. Should violations persist unaddressed, appropriate measures shall be undertaken in accordance with established regulatory frameworks, with grievance and appeal procedures remaining available under approved administrative processes.
The framework serves to establish more consistent standards for regulating and maintaining industrial building facades, advancing Abu Dhabi’s urban excellence whilst uniting safety imperatives, operational efficiency and environmental quality within industrial precincts.
