Abu Dhabi Unveils Comprehensive Framework for Wearable Technologies in Preventive Healthcare

Future Health – A Global Initiative by Abu Dhabi has released a forward-thinking whitepaper that establishes a five-pillar framework designed to integrate wearable technologies seamlessly into the emirate's healthcare ecosystem, enabling more preventive, personalised and continuous models of care.
Abu Dhabi has taken a significant stride in advancing healthcare innovation through the release of a comprehensive whitepaper that charts the path for embedding wearable technologies into the future of health and wellbeing. Developed through a collaborative partnership, the publication establishes a sophisticated five-pillar framework that addresses the multifaceted considerations required for the successful integration of these transformative technologies into Abu Dhabi’s health system.
The framework encompasses technology and interoperability; data governance and privacy; regulatory and policy enablement; consumer and clinical adoption; and ecosystem partnerships and innovation. Together, these pillars form a robust architecture that recognises both the tremendous potential and the complex requirements inherent in scaling wearable-enabled healthcare solutions across an entire emirate.
The timing of this publication reflects the remarkable trajectory of the global wearable technology sector. The market, valued at approximately USD 92.9 billion in 2025, is anticipated to expand substantially to USD 229.9 billion by 2033, underscoring the accelerating significance of these devices in healthcare delivery worldwide.
Dr Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, articulated the vision underpinning this strategic initiative: wearable technologies offer the opportunity to generate more continuous insights into individual health and enable earlier identification of risk factors. The true value, she emphasised, emerges when these insights are meaningfully integrated with the broader health system to facilitate timely interventions and support individuals in maintaining optimal wellbeing.
Abu Dhabi possesses considerable infrastructure and experience upon which to build this ambition. Through Sahatna, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi synthesises wearable data with longitudinal health records from Malaffi to generate a personalised Health Age score, offering users invaluable insights into the clinical and lifestyle factors shaping their wellbeing. Complemented by initiatives including e-prescriptions and the Emirati Genome Program, these foundations create substantial opportunities to connect continuous health data with Abu Dhabi’s overarching commitment to prevention, longevity and personalised care.
The whitepaper articulates a thoughtful three-phase roadmap spanning Build, Accelerate and Transform phases. The initial Build phase prioritises policy clarity, technical standards, early pilots and stakeholder alignment. The Accelerate phase contemplates deeper integration into health platforms and provider workflows, whilst the Transform phase envisions wearable data as a trusted, routine input into precision prevention and population health management.
The framework identifies particular domains of high-value application, including diabetes and obesity, maternal health, elderly fall-risk management and preventive wellness programmes. These areas represent substantial public-health priorities where continuous health insights have the potential to generate meaningful clinical benefit and improved population outcomes.
