Abu Dhabi Unveils Emirate DNA to Shape Cohesive Urban and Architectural Identity

The Urban Planning and Permits Centre has launched a comprehensive initiative to strengthen Abu Dhabi's distinctive architectural and urban character, drawing on the emirate's rich cultural heritage while recognising the individual identities of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra.
The Urban Planning and Permits Centre (UPPC), operating under the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has inaugurated Emirate DNA, an ambitious urban and architectural initiative conceived to fortify the identity of Abu Dhabi and establish how this identity finds expression through its buildings, streetscapes and public spaces.
Presented at LIVEX 2026, Emirate DNA represents a foundational shift towards coherent urban and architectural stewardship across the emirate. The framework draws inspiration from Abu Dhabi’s distinctive culture, heritage and natural environment, whilst simultaneously honouring the individual character of the three principal regions: Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra. This dual approach permits comprehensive emirate-wide consistency without compromising the particular qualities that define each locality.
A Shared Vision for Growth
His Excellency Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, emphasised the initiative’s significance: “As Abu Dhabi continues to grow and evolve, our urban and architectural identity must remain firmly rooted in the culture, heritage and environment that define the Emirate. Emirate DNA establishes a coherent approach to strengthen this identity, while recognising the distinctive character of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra. This will help ensure that Abu Dhabi’s development remains grounded in what makes each of our communities and places distinctive to the Emirate.”
Practical Application Across the Built Environment
Emirate DNA transcends abstract principles to provide practical guidance that permeates every dimension of the built environment. The framework encompasses architectural elements—from building and villa façades to pedestrian bridges and mosques—as well as the finer details of urban design: paving patterns, planting schemes, shade structures, lighting installations, signage, street furniture, playgrounds and public facilities. By attending to these constituent elements, Emirate DNA recognises that urban character emerges from the cumulative effect of thoughtfully considered details, each contributing to spaces that are simultaneously liveable and distinctly recognisable.
His Excellency Abdulla Mohamed Alblooshi, Director General of the UPPC, observed: “Emirate DNA provides a practical framework for translating Abu Dhabi’s identity into the built environment. It gives municipalities, developers, architects and planners a shared reference for considering Abu Dhabi’s identity and local context throughout the design and development process, ensuring that future development responds to its surroundings while strengthening Abu Dhabi’s urban identity.”
Phased Development and Regional Expression
The initiative progresses through distinct phases, enabling tailored development responsive to regional characteristics. Al Ain has already completed its high-level reference framework, demonstrating how local identity can be authentically translated into design vocabulary. The city’s colour palette draws its inspiration from the distinctive sands, historic oasis landscape and traditional aflaj irrigation systems, whilst design patterns derive from Al Ain’s architectural heritage. LIVEX 2026 attendees can observe how these local influences will be practically integrated into architecture and public design interventions. Development work is advancing on comparable frameworks for Abu Dhabi and Al Dhafra.
Emirate DNA operates as an integral component of the UPPC’s broader mandate to shepherd Abu Dhabi’s long-term urban development. The initiative supports the Department of Municipalities and Transport in planning, regulating and enabling the urban systems that underpin everyday life throughout the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
