Abu Dhabi’s ALTÉRRA forges strategic tie-up with FinDev Canada to scale climate finance in growth markets

ALTÉRRA and FinDev Canada have signed a memorandum of understanding at the Canada Investment Summit to mobilise institutional and catalytic capital for decarbonisation and resilience projects across Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa.

Partnership aims to unlock investable climate opportunities

ALTÉRRA, the Abu Dhabi‑headquartered climate investment manager, and FinDev Canada, Canada’s development finance institution, have agreed a strategic partnership to mobilise capital at scale for climate investment in emerging and developing markets. The memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed on the sidelines of the Canada Investment Summit, sets out a collaborative intent to develop co‑financings, funds, platforms and blended‑finance structures designed to accelerate decarbonisation and strengthen climate resilience.

Focus regions and sectors

The two institutions will concentrate their efforts across Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa. Areas of interest include clean energy, grids and storage, sustainable transport, water, resilient infrastructure and climate‑smart agriculture. The partnership places emphasis on combining catalytic and commercial capital to unlock new opportunities and to create scalable investment models that can be replicated across markets.

Combining investment experience and catalytic capital

ALTÉRRA, established to transform how and where the world invests in climate solutions, seeks to deliver measurable climate impact alongside commercial returns. In growth markets, the firm advances this mandate through co‑investments and by deploying catalytic capital; it has pioneered first‑of‑their‑kind strategies with partners including Brookfield and TPG to enable broader institutional participation.

FinDev Canada brings the specialised expertise of a development finance institution, with capabilities intended to turn promising climate opportunities into investable realities while expanding private‑sector flows into underfunded markets.

Leaders underscore scale and urgency

His Excellency Majid Al Suwaidi, CEO of ALTÉRRA, said: “Emerging and developing markets will be central to the global climate transition and represent one of the greatest investment opportunities of our time. According to ALTÉRRA’s latest Impact Report, 37 per cent of climate investment opportunities are already considered investable or near‑investable, underscoring the scale of the opportunity that exists today. Bridging the remaining investment gap requires strong partnerships, innovative financing, and a shared commitment to mobilising private capital at scale. Together with FinDev Canada, we aim to expand the pipeline of investable climate opportunities and accelerate capital into high‑potential markets, drawing on Canada’s strength in infrastructure investing and development finance to help deliver both economic and climate outcomes.”

Lori Kerr, CEO of FinDev Canada, said: “The climate transition will not be achieved in developed markets alone. Emerging markets offer extraordinary opportunities to strengthen resilience, advance sustainable growth, and create more prosperous economies, yet investment remains far below what is needed. By bringing together our complementary investment experience, networks, and climate finance capabilities, ALTERRA and FinDev Canada aim to turn promising climate opportunities into investable realities and demonstrate models that can be replicated across markets. Our ambition is to unlock larger flows of private capital and accelerate climate action and economic opportunity where they are needed most.”

Knowledge sharing and ecosystem development

Beyond capital mobilisation, the MoU envisages joint knowledge‑sharing and thought‑leadership initiatives intended to strengthen the broader climate finance ecosystem. By improving market understanding and promoting replicable financing models, the partners aim to create conditions that encourage greater private‑sector participation in climate solutions worldwide.

The collaboration signals Abu Dhabi’s continued emergence as a hub for climate finance capability and innovation, reinforcing the emirate’s role in channelising expertise and capital toward the global transition in a way that aligns commercial returns with measurable environmental impact.
