Active Abu Dhabi Move Challenge Celebrates Remarkable Participation with 2.31 Million Steps

A groundbreaking initiative seamlessly integrating physical activity into the everyday routines of residents across the emirate has recorded an extraordinary engagement, transforming familiar shopping destinations into vibrant spaces of movement and discovery.
The Active Abu Dhabi Move Challenge, an innovative collaboration between the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre’s citymoov digital platform and Active Abu Dhabi, has demonstrated the profound potential of making movement an effortless and enriching component of daily life. During the months of July and August, participants traversed an impressive collective distance of 1,735 kilometres whilst recording 2.31 million steps across five carefully selected shopping malls throughout the emirate.
This elegantly conceived initiative represents a sophisticated departure from conventional fitness endeavours, transcending the limitations of traditional spaces such as the Corniche and parks by bringing interactive movement experiences into the shopping destinations that form an integral part of residents’ everyday lives. Rather than imposing demanding performance metrics or competitive pressures, the challenge embraced a philosophy of profound inclusivity, welcoming participants of all fitness levels to engage at their own comfortable pace and according to their individual capabilities.
Through ingeniously designed location-based digital challenges, the citymoov app encouraged participants to explore their surroundings and complete engaging tasks during their customary visits, seamlessly weaving additional movement into their day without requiring any disruption to established routines or the allocation of dedicated time for physical activity. This thoughtfully calibrated approach transformed movement into a natural, effortless and genuinely enjoyable aspect of the community experience.
Dr. Rashed Alsuwaidi, Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, articulated the profound significance of this endeavour, emphasising that cultivating physical activity necessitates the creation of innovative approaches that render movement an accessible and pleasurable dimension of everyday existence. He highlighted how the citymoov platform harnesses the transformative potential of digital technology and gamification whilst underscoring the indispensable role of community partnerships in fostering a more dynamic and vitally engaged Abu Dhabi community.
Mansour Al Dhaheri, Founder of Active Abu Dhabi, articulated the challenge’s core ambition to render physical activity more attainable whilst liberating it from the conventional constraints that often impede participation. The collaboration with citymoov proved instrumental in reimagining familiar environments such as shopping malls as destinations that organically inspire movement, discovery and meaningful community engagement.
Five premier shopping destinations participated in hosting the citymoov challenges: Al Dhafra Mall, Al Foah Mall, Al Wahda Mall, Dalma Mall and Al Khalidiyah Mall, ensuring the campaign’s reach extended comprehensively across the emirate’s resident population.
