A strategic partnership between two of the UAE's energy giants signals a new chapter in how the nation secures its growing power needs through domestic gas supplies.
The relationship between reliable energy supply and a nation’s prosperity runs deep. For the United Arab Emirates, where economic and population growth continues to accelerate, the infrastructure that underpins power generation has become increasingly vital. On Wednesday, ADNOC Gas plc and Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) took a significant step forward by signing an agreement to explore natural gas supply arrangements for new power generation capacity across the Northern Emirates.
The collaboration represents more than a commercial arrangement; it reflects a deliberate strategy to strengthen the UAE’s energy independence and resilience. By connecting ADNOC Gas’ expanding domestic supply with EtihadWE’s future power generation infrastructure, the partnership creates a secure, long-term pathway for delivering electricity to communities and businesses across the region. This domestic focus is particularly important as the nation balances its energy portfolio, reducing reliance on imported fuels whilst supporting the infrastructure needed for continued growth.
Fatema Al Nuaimi, Chief Executive Officer of ADNOC Gas, emphasised the significance of the moment: “ADNOC Gas is investing to meet the UAE’s growing energy needs. By expanding our capacity and infrastructure, we can connect new gas supply with new customers, support future power generation and create sustainable long-term value for our shareholders.” Her words underline how this agreement sits within ADNOC Gas’ broader growth programme, one of the world’s largest integrated gas initiatives, which includes the Rich Gas Development project and Estidama, a pipeline modernisation programme designed to optimise the network and support rising demand across the emirates.
For EtihadWE, the partnership strengthens its ability to develop a balanced energy generation portfolio. Eng. Yousif Ahmed Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EtihadWE, noted that the collaboration with a global energy leader provides access to reliable, long-term gas supplies whilst supporting the delivery of a secure and sustainable electricity system. This mirrors the broader energy transition underway, as we reported in November, when Ras Al Khaimah hosted a pivotal energy summit convening global leaders on sustainable power systems.
The agreement was witnessed by Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and Chairman of the Board of Directors of EtihadWE, reflecting the strategic importance attached to securing the nation’s energy future. As ADNOC Gas unlocks additional supply through its investment programme, broadening its domestic customer base provides new sources of long-term demand alongside its existing UAE and international markets, including its five-year liquefied natural gas partnership with TotalEnergies.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
This partnership strengthens the foundations of Abu Dhabi’s energy security and supports the Northern Emirates’ ability to power their continued development. By creating a reliable domestic gas supply channel for new power generation capacity, the agreement helps reduce the UAE’s exposure to imported fuels and ensures that electricity generation can keep pace with the nation’s economic and demographic growth.
For Abu Dhabi’s economy and population, the practical benefits are tangible: a more resilient energy infrastructure means more stable power supply for businesses and households, supporting everything from industrial operations to daily life. The partnership also demonstrates how ADNOC Gas’ substantial investments in infrastructure and capacity are translating into real-world applications that benefit the broader UAE economy and the communities it serves.
