The architecture is streamlined and contemporary, the massing turned towards the water rather than towards the road, and the plot sits directly on Al Bateen Marina with the yacht berths below the terraces. Bespoke private villas form part of the same estate.
The result is a five star hotel that reads as a piece of marina infrastructure rather than a tower set down on a boulevard, which is the correct instinct for this address. Al Bateen is the capital’s yacht harbour, and a building here that faced inland would be wasting its site.
The plot on Al Bateen Marina
The address is Al Bateen Marina on King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, on the quieter western side of the main island.
That places the hotel on the same stretch of water as The Abu Dhabi EDITION, with Emirates Palace, Etihad Towers and Qasr Al Watan a short drive away and the Corniche a few minutes further. Al Bateen Executive Airport is close, which is a practical consideration for a good share of the guest list.
Al Bateen Marina is a working harbour rather than a decorative basin, and the promenade around it is public. Its restaurants and cafés are open to residents of the city as well as to guests, which extends what is available here well beyond the hotel’s own kitchens. A minute on foot from the lobby puts you among independent operators, and a hotel of this size does not need to run twelve restaurants when the quayside already has them.
Six categories of room
Accommodation is organised into six categories: Deluxe Room, Premium Room, Deluxe Suite, Premium Suite, Presidential Suite and the Royal M Suite. Marina and city outlooks are both available.
The Royal M Suite sits at the top of that list with the Presidential Suite beneath it, and the two suite tiers below those give a travelling party of almost any size somewhere to go without leaving the building. The private villas are a separate proposition again, for guests who want a front door of their own.
The marina facing categories are the ones that justify the address, looking out over the yachts and the water rather than across a road. City facing rooms are cheaper and perfectly comfortable, but the whole argument for staying here is the harbour, and a room turned away from it gives up the reason for the postcode.
Interiors are contemporary and richly finished, in a register closer to the regional idiom than to the pared back international style of its immediate neighbour on the same quay. That contrast is the most useful thing a prospective guest can know. A traveller who finds The Abu Dhabi EDITION austere will find Royal M the more comfortable of the two, and a traveller who wants pale oak and white linen will prefer the EDITION. Both look at the same yachts.
The infinity pool, the rooftop and the island
An infinity pool serves the property, oriented towards Hudayriyat Island across the water, and there are rooftop pools above it. Loungers and poolside service run through the day.
Rooftop water is uncommon in Abu Dhabi hotels of this size, and having both a ground level infinity pool and pools on the roof means a guest can choose between a view across the harbour and a view over it.
The hotel also operates a private island beach club, which answers the question that a marina address otherwise raises. Corniche Beach is a short drive in any case, and the promenade outside runs the length of the harbour for anyone who would rather walk than swim.

Meetings, and the independent question
Three meeting rooms carry the corporate programme, equipped for presentations and video, with a business centre alongside them. The scale suits private dinners, product launches and board level gatherings rather than large conferences, and the proximity of the executive airport makes this a practical choice for a day of meetings that ends with a flight.
Abu Dhabi’s luxury market is dominated by the global groups, which makes an independent five star worth noticing. Royal M competes on setting and on a more personal register of service rather than on brand recognition, and as a recent arrival it should be judged on that basis rather than against houses with decades of operating history behind them.
Where it sits on the water
Two five star hotels occupy Al Bateen Marina, and they could hardly be less alike. The Abu Dhabi EDITION runs 198 rooms and 57 serviced residences to a minimalist template, with more than 9,300 square feet of event space and six named venues. Royal M offers six room categories, an infinity pool facing Hudayriyat, pools on the roof, an island beach club and three meeting rooms.
Emirates Palace, Qasr Al Watan and the Corniche are all within a short drive, so a guest based here has the ceremonial quarter of the capital on one side and the yacht harbour on the other. Take a marina facing room, use the promenade in the evening, and swim in the rooftop water rather than at ground level.
