Constructing the Invisible City: An Exploration of Urban Space and Social Meaning

How do the spaces we inhabit shape the ways we move through them, interact with one another, and experience community? This compelling question forms the foundation of ‘Constructing the Invisible City’, a studio seminar that invites us to contemplate the invisible social rules that govern our shared public realms.

The seminar unfolds through an immersive journey of discovery. We begin with a guided field trip to Mina Zayed, that evocative waterfront quarter, where participants observe with deliberate attention how different spatial configurations influence human behaviour, movement, and social gathering. The exercise proves revelatory: the same street, the same plaza, the same architectural threshold can invite entirely different patterns of human interaction depending on the subtle cues encoded within the space itself.

From these observations, we proceed to imaginative exploration. Working collaboratively in small groups, participants construct fictional societies, each with their own distinct values, traditions and customs. The compelling exercise then asks: how might these imagined communities inhabit the very same streets differently? What would they prioritise? Which spaces would they claim? How might their own cultural logics reshape the experience of place?

Through a synthesis of careful observation, thoughtful discussion and collaborative creative making, the seminar illuminates a profound truth: that public space is never neutral, never fixed in meaning. Rather, it becomes a canvas upon which different communities project their own understandings, their own needs, their own ways of being together.

The session takes place on 24 October, from 11 AM to 3 PM, and welcomes all participants regardless of prior experience. Admission is complimentary.
