Crown Prince Khaled Charts New Course for UAE-Canada Partnership

Crown Prince Khaled Charts New Course for UAE-Canada Partnership

H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has held official talks in Ottawa with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, establishing a framework for expanded cooperation across defence, renewable energy, trade and investment worth billions of dollars.

The autumn air in Ottawa carried the weight of ambition as H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, arrived at Parliament Hill to chart a new course in the relationship between two nations separated by continents yet drawn together by shared economic vision and strategic purpose.

The Crown Prince, arriving as part of an official visit to Canada, was received by Prime Minister Mark Carney with the ceremonial gravitas befitting such an occasion. The discussions that followed ranged across the full spectrum of bilateral opportunity: trade and investment, artificial intelligence and advanced technology, defence, clean energy, mining, infrastructure and logistics, aviation and space, and food security.

What emerged from these conversations was tangible momentum. Following the talks, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Prime Minister Carney witnessed the signing of three agreements and memorandums of understanding, alongside a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between the two countries. These accords aim to expand cooperation in shared priority sectors, including defence, renewable energy and diplomatic training, translating strategic intent into concrete partnership.

The financial scope of these emerging ties is considerable. Emirati companies are conducting trade and investment negotiations with Canadian counterparts valued at up to C$21.1 billion (equivalent to US$15 billion), operating within a broader C$70 billion (equivalent to US$50 billion) investment framework that was announced during Prime Minister Carney’s visit to the UAE in November 2025. These negotiations span four key strategic sectors: mining, logistics, energy and investment in sovereign wealth funds, reflecting a deliberate focus on sectors that support sustainable economic growth.

The Crown Prince conveyed the greetings of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to the Canadian Prime Minister, whilst Prime Minister Carney extended reciprocal wishes for His Highness’ continued health and happiness and for the UAE’s further advancement and prosperity. This ceremonial exchange underscored the diplomatic weight carried by both delegations and the serious intent behind their discussions.

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan emphasised the UAE’s commitment to strengthening relations with Canada and establishing long-term strategic partnerships that support both countries’ development priorities and enhance their economic competitiveness. The emphasis fell upon deepening cooperation between Emirati and Canadian institutions and companies, building on progress to develop joint projects in priority sectors and creating sustainable economic value.

The Crown Prince also met with Emirati students during the visit, emphasising education as central to the UAE’s vision for global competitiveness and development. This engagement reflected a commitment to nurturing the human capital that underpins long-term bilateral partnership.

Beyond economic matters, both sides exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest, emphasising the importance of supporting dialogue and diplomatic solutions and strengthening efforts to promote security, peace and stability regionally and internationally.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

For Abu Dhabi, this deepening partnership with Canada represents a strategic expansion of the emirate’s global economic footprint. The investment framework and emerging trade negotiations position the UAE as an increasingly significant player in Canadian sectors ranging from mining and logistics to renewable energy and sovereign wealth management. These partnerships align with Abu Dhabi’s broader development priorities and its commitment to economic diversification and sustainable growth.

The bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding, particularly in defence, renewable energy and diplomatic training, strengthen Abu Dhabi’s institutional relationships with a developed, stable nation committed to security, innovation and environmental stewardship. The emphasis on encouraging mutual investment and expanding collaboration between relevant entities promises to create tangible economic and development benefits that serve the interests of both Abu Dhabi and Canada’s peoples for years to come.
