DEWA and World Economic Forum Chart Course for Sustainable Innovation

Dubai's electricity and water authority engages with global leadership to advance clean energy, digital transformation and technological excellence ahead of Davos 2027

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, received a distinguished delegation from the World Economic Forum, led by Alois Zwinggi, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Forum and Chair of the Annual Meetings of the Global Future Councils. The engagement centred upon deepening cooperation in sustainability, technology and economic development, with particular focus upon the forthcoming Davos 2027 summit.

The meeting brought together Eng. Marwan bin Haidar, Executive Vice President of Innovation and the Future, and Eng. Waleed bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence, representing DEWA’s commitment to strategic partnership and collaborative advancement.

Mr Al Tayer articulated DEWA’s comprehensive portfolio of clean energy initiatives, digital transformation programmes and deployment of artificial intelligence and Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies. He drew attention to the organisation’s formidable global standing, encompassing ranking first across thirteen pivotal global Key Performance Indicators within its sectors of operation. Dubai has achieved the lowest Customer Minutes Lost for electricity globally, averaging merely 0.82 minutes annually per customer, whilst electricity transmission and distribution network losses remain exceptionally modest at two percent.

The conversation encompassed the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, both of which envisage the provision of entirely clean energy by mid-century. Central to this transformative vision stands the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, an extraordinary facility representing the world’s largest single-site solar installation employing the Independent Power Producer model. The park’s capacity is projected to surpass 8,000 megawatts by 2030, an elevation from the original target of 5,000 megawatts, thereby facilitating the reduction of carbon emissions by more than 8.5 million tonnes annually, in comparison with the original projection of 6.5 million tonnes.

Mr Al Tayer expounded upon DEWA’s sophisticated integration of artificial intelligence throughout the preceding decade, demonstrating measurable enhancements to operational efficiency and service delivery. He reaffirmed the institution’s enduring partnership with the World Economic Forum, recalling that in 2018, DEWA became the inaugural government utility establishment globally to assume partnership status within the Forum’s Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This collaboration concentrates upon emerging technologies, anticipation of prospective challenges and the formulation of far-reaching strategic frameworks.
